Hey, I need to send a fishing rod back to a company for a warranty replacement...what is the cheapest way? It is a 1 peice 7' rod.

Thanks guys!

Contact the rod company, Some(Shimano) let you cut the rods in half to save on shipping costs

Yep, and some have discounted rates, like St. Croix.

It was a Duckett rod. I love my Duckett rods but a guide came off and I called Duckett and they said they would pay for the return shipping but I would have to pay for the shipping to Duckett. I have a long tube that one off my other rods were shipped in I just don't know who (USPS, UPS, Fed-ex) is the cheapest.

I know BPS sends rods via fed-ex Smart Post...whatever that is.

Thanks guys!

You'll have to call around....can you get the rod repaired locally? Any custom rod builder could do it, probably for much less than shipping.

Replacing a guide is a $6-$7 job. Even one way postage is going to cost you $20 min. Let me know where you are located and I'll try to hook you up with a local rod builder.

For future reference, I ship via UPS if the rod/tube is 7'>. Priority or parcel post is competetive on the shorter ones but goes way up after a certain length.

That length is 7'2". If you ship in cardboard, it will run you maybe 15 to 20 bucks, PVC is a bit more because its heavy.

I would agree with the consensus though, just pay to replace the guide. If its not an oddball style like say the Castaway Microwaves or the like, a builder should have no problem getting one or may even have one on hand for you.

Have them ship you the guide/s and have it repaired locally

DVT, you aren't kidding! I went at lunch today to return a broken Dobyns Rod. First stop: Post Office....they wanted $110 to send the rod back in a 96" cardboard tube!! I called for the manager who came and reaffirmed the price. I wasn't upset about it...just shocked. $110!! I thought surely it was a miscalcuation. I went down the road to the UPS store and ended up paying $23 there.

Bottom line...don't even bother with the post office on the longer stuff. They are not even close to competitive.

FedEx Ground works for me when I sell my rods on ebay or the forums. The last time it cost me $25 to ship a 7'3" rod. Probably slightly more expensive than UPS, but I've "heard" too many horror stories about broken rods shipped with UPS. Never tried UPS, so I don't know any better.

I haven't heard any horror stories about UPS or experienced them myself. In fact, TW ships their rods UPS Ground. Plus, UPS insures anything under $100 for free.

UPS broke a rod that I bought from TW, and beat up another so bad that the guides were all bent. TW fixed that at no extra charge, but I've learnt to spend 10 extra bucks and get my rods by FedEx next day air. Not hating on UPS, just saying. I'm sure stuff like that happens with USPS or FedEx too..

That's weird because I thought the TW tubes were indestructible. But if it was beat up because the rod was moving around, it's TW's fault for not packing it good. They did that with my rod. They only bubble wrapped the top 2 guides. I haven't had any problem with USPS except that once you get past the 81" mark, the price soars up. After that length I go to UPS. I have only used FedEx once because of the price. Oh and sorry I didn't mean to confront you I just was trying to get further info.

Sent two rods to Shimano in a heavy cardboard tube via UPS with $400 insurance and it cost me $28.

Broke one of my Verdict spinning rods yesterday landing a five-pounder and will send it to Abu in the Shimano cardboard tube that Shimano sent the two rods back to me.

Will cost a little under $28 as I will insure the rod for $150.

I hate breaking rods. :)
