Anyone have any ideas or similar experience. I purchased a new Powell Max rod 7' heavy and am losing fish. I am using the new rod for fishing deeper jigs 5 to 20 feet deep. I fished 2 tournaments this weekend and lost fish on this rod and only this rod. 5 the 1st day before I stowed it and 1 5+ pounder the 2nd day before putting it away. I like the sensitiveity and the way it handles but can't afford to lose fish. Do these rods have a slower action it's suppose to be extra fast. ANY IDEAS

woops - line wasn't breaking. The jigs just came out it was almost like the 5lber came up seen the boat and spit out the jig. I set the hook hard and thought maybe I was ripping a hole in their lip and it was falling out but when this one came out the line was tight so I think it should have been ok. Switched out to similar Loomis and no further issues. The action on the GL3 lommis seems heavier.

LOL, it's a heavy power, x-fast rod - made for wormin' and jigs.

It probably just isn't a match for you. Not every rod works with everyone. That's how preferences develop.

Most likely you aren't getting a solid enough hook-set. You might think you are, but from what you describe you're not. It can be any number of reasons, the rod, the line, the hook, your set itself. If you're fishing a high stretch line, go to Abrazx or step up in test.

The endurance line of powell rods have a stiffer tip (when compared to a max of the same power rating). I have a max and a endurance. The endurance seems to have a faster tip, for sure stiffer.

Like stated earlier, everyones preferences and techniques differ from one another. The rod you are using might not go well with your style.

Right, but Powell rods tend to fish more like a power down rather than their actual rating. I've fished with the rod mentioned above and it felt like a MH/MF rather than a H/XF.

That may be true, but I've caught jig fish on everything from medium to XXXXH. He probably just hasn't matched the hookset to the rod.

And did the OP verify that the hook point wasn't rolled on that jig? That'll cause all kinds hookup issues, regardless of rod choice.

I own the rod mentioned and it definatly fishes like a H/F rod, not a MH/MF. The Endurance series rods are a little more stout tho. My 714C has a faster tip than the 704C.

Sorry guys not trying to start anything. I'm using Seagar Ab line in 15lb test and yes I checked and changed jigs a couple times and still had issues. I have used this same set up with everything from GLX 843 to GL3 844 and never had the issue. It very well could be me but I have a hard time beliving that when the problem seems to come and go with the rod at this point. I know it won't come out again until I'm just fishing. In my opinion it does seem to be a lighter action MH than Heavy. If the problem persists keep an eye out in the garage sale section.LOL

It fished kind of like my old Lowrider Lizard Dragger. Great rod though for sure. I really like the Powell rods, they just seem a tad tip-heavy to me. Pretty sensitive though!

No doubt, man! A M/XF or a light MH is a sweet finesse jig rod!

Bingo! My buddy cannot use my rod either.....it was just not his preference. He couldn't get used to it unfortunately.

I have the rod, certainly seems like fast action to me. No problems with hook sets.

Maybe try a longer rod, the 7'3" Powell in the same action and power is one of my favorite rods.

Interesting that JFranco mentioned that the rod might just be a bad match for you. I have a cumara that I want to love so badly (and sitting on the deck of my boat or fondling it in the garage I do love it) but I don't know how many more fish I can have come unbuttoned before I kick it to the curb.

Kinda like that really hot gal that you want so badly to be compatible with, but deep down you know it just ain't gonna last.

It could very well be the extra fast action that is causing you woe, I find that I put a lot more fish in the boat with a moderate fast action when fishing a jig, The slightly more progressive bend of the rod helps keep the hook more firmly nailed, I use a Falco FC-6-17 which is a relatively moderate fast rod and seldom lose a fish. Conversely my G Loomis BCR 875 while much stiffer and faster is also much harder to keep a fish hooked up on. Power Tackle touts the fact that their rods have a moderate fast action which helps not only with hook ups but durability also..........Cmack

Like the OP, if you're not used to how fast the rod is, particularly in the case of the Cumara if it's an XF, you're going to have troubles. The Cumara is on the verge of being stoopid fast. You'll have fish come unpinned because the tip recovers so quickly it gives them slack. With 20lb Tatsu and a 3/8oz jig, All I need to do to set the hook on a jig is pop my wrist, the rest of the movement is just to get the fish moving in the right direction.

As mention in my first post, and by others, the rod may just not be a fit for you. I'm like that with a couple of the GLX rods. I would rather fish the IMX in the same rods, and do fish the IMX instead. No sense in fighting it, get what works for you.

Hooligan - Very nice reply and it makes perfect sense. I was just wondering if anyone had issues similar. Thanks guys for all the input. I'm gonna give it one more chance and see how well we bond. If not I'll stick with what I like and sell it off. As far as handling and feel I really like the rod but as said it might not be for me.
