rowyourboat Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 at my home lake, it is TOUGH to say the least. in the spring and early summer, it was taking around 15 lbs to win. to the average is between 5-7 lbs. largemouth have all but been nonexistant. spots are the majority of what is being weighed in. so here are my questions, 1. what lures / tactics are a sure fire plan to catch a limit of spots? 2. after getting a limit, what lures would you use to maybe grab a largemouth or two just some extra info, the surface temp is mid 80s, water is VERY clear. the lake doesnt have much structure or cover. its deep on the middle, shallow at the bank. very little weeds/timber. a fer rocky places. thanks! catch anything Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 maybe try any points you can find or any creek channels or things like that Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 15, 2011 Super User Posted August 15, 2011 Read the thread by ClintC. Finesse slip shot rig or drop shot rig; except with 6 to 8 lb FC line. Spots like rocks, they also seem to prefer green colors with charteruse tips like Roboworms mean green, green shiner and junebug hot tips. Drop shot with size 1 Owner mosqito or Gamakatsu drop shot, nose hooked. Meter the bass or thermocline, fish at that depth. Tom Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 15, 2011 Super User Posted August 15, 2011 Go shallow for a big largemouth. Yes,even in the heat of summer. Pound the thickest shallow cover you can find. And don't expect to load the boat, your basicly hunting for 1 fish. Quote
RangerEnthusiast Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 All of these are great solutions. The drop shot can produce a lot of fish as well as a senko. In our club this summer all four ten pound plus bass that were brought to the scales came from shallow heavy mats. Fish mats with a 1/2 to 3/4 ounce jig black and blue or a pumpkinseed with some sort of trailer and remember a soft pitch is critical it has a lot to do with presentation. I fish mats to look for a pig or a kicker fish. Good Luck. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 15, 2011 Super User Posted August 15, 2011 I see you are somewhere in West Virginia which is in the same geographical area as Virginia but with a higher elevation. We have been having some nasty heat in Virginia making the fish go deep. Could this be happening on your waters? If you have a watercraft can you go to the deepest part of the lake, river or pond and try your luck on the bottom? Is the water clear, stained, heavily stained or dirty? Makes a difference. Give us some more details and we may be able to give you better suggestions. As for now, you need to fish the bottom, off the bottom, middle of water column and then topwater to find the fish. You may have to go out before sunrise and throw topwaters until the sun comes up; or go out in the late evening and try your luck as the sun sets. Good luck and let us know what happens. Quote
