J_Pearson Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Your take on them..Personal favorites, opinions as to if they work attracting fish or merely masking unpleasurable odors. And secondly, your opinion on using them while night fishing for bass, because senses other than sight come more into play while fishing under the stars.. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 I like smelly jelly better than any other scent. Crawdaddy, crawfish anise, and bass feast are the types I would use for bass fishing. Keep them in the cooler during summer of the jelly will melt from the heat. It stays on better than other scents. In my mind scents at BEST produce a few more strikes from interested bass. Lure action, profile, and depth are much more important. As for night fishing, noise and vibration are the two most important factors. Quote
adclem Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I really like Mega Strike and JJ's. Both work extremely well. Later, Quote
Super User cart7t Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 I started noticing that garlic scented soft plastics were held onto much longer by bass than those non-garlic given the same type of bait and color. I've never bought into the theory that scent alone was responsible for triggering strikes nor could it somehow spark a feeding frenzy if you soaked your line in it so the scent would disperse into the water as you were retrieving the lure. Super User Sam Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 Megastrike; JJs and Carolina Lunker Sauce for pond and fun fishing as I do not want to waste the two aforementioned scents for fun fishing. Quote
Blue Streak Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I think scents have more to do with taste than anything else. If they work at all they may cause bass to hold onto a bait longer allowing more time to detect the strike. Bass do not hunt or feed using their sense of smell. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 I really like Mega Strike and JJ's. Both work extremely well.Later, I agree! Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I only use scents in the colder months or when the fish are lock jawed. I don't think they will attract a fish from a ways out though. They will however entice them if they are looking/considering the lure already. I do however believe that they will make a fish hold the lure a lot longer. I personally use the B.A.N.G spray cans. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 MegaStrike. It's my confidence edge. Quote

X3 with megastrike and soon ganna be tryin JJ's due to tons of praise from these guys (do a search on here for JJ's or megastrike bc there a numerous topics on them both) Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 Another vote for Megastrike, and JJ's.. One thing I like about Megastrike is, it helps to keep my plastic's real supple..which helps them retain great action. Quote
adclem Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Friday fishing in the rain I was throwing a swim jig with a Kinami 4" Bay Bass single tail grub. They were just nibbling, no takers. So I applied some Mega Strike through back to the same spot and they ripped the grubs tail off, pulled the body half way off the hook, before he dang near swallowed the entire jig. I couldn't believe it. They did the same thing all day. Nibble and then they attacked! It was like they went insane for a moment. Like a cat with cat nip. Later, Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 Never use them Actually, if I had a choice I'd buy soft-plastics with no added odors. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I dont use them-I dont fish- I have no time-LOL Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 I dont use them-I dont fish- I have no time-LOL In the words of McEnroe "You Can't Be Serious!" ;D Roger Quote
aarogb Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I use two different brands: Megastrike and Smelly Jelly. Scents do both of the things you mentioned. They mask odors that the fish don't like and they both help fish hold onto your bait once they have it in their mouth. Never night fished for bass, so I couldn't help you there. Quote
bigtimfish Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 When I REMEMBER to use scents, I use Kick n Bass(anise Shad) and Yum (crawfish). Do they cause more strikes?????? I honestley think that it will cause a fish to hold on longer. And I believe if a fish gets a taste and gets a short strike it will make it hit again rather than go away. Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 I really like Mega Strike and JJ's. Both work extremely well.Later, X2 Chompers Garlic also. Quote
Furbit Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I use both MegaStrike and Edge Hot Sauce Gel. I never really believed scents did much more other then taste. However I have always believed it was possible for a scent to do more then just that, but have not seen it until now for this year MegaStrike has proven to me that's there's more to it then that. It has turned followers into strikers. If the bass are following your lure but not taking it, trust me, add a little Strike and hold onto your rod. I do however still keep the Edge Hot Sauce Gel with me also, simply because my two biggest bass have come while using it, however I have no proof they hit because of the sauce, but I got a feeling my new personal best is just around the corner and that she will have MegaStrike tattooed on her butt, simply because I have seen with my own eyes, not because someone said or some pro promotes it, what this stuff can do. It's no magic potion, you still have to be fishing in the right place at the right time with the right presentation, but if you do that and add the Strike to your lure, well I have seen it turn lookers into hookers, so to speak. In fact I have seen them not really want the frog I was throwing, yet once I added the Strike, it was more then they could take, for they just hammered the frog they where not interested in seconds before without the strike added. The stuff works, period! And for me to say that about any scent, well I am pretty sure hell is freezing over at this very moment. LOL Quote
Triton21 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I really like Mega Strike and JJ's. Both work extremely well.Later, I agree! ME TOO!!! Kelley Quote
GonzoFishing Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I've been using the LPT Garlic scent and it seems to help. It definitely kills the plastic smell that some of my lures have and to me that makes it worth it Quote
rubba bubba Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Definitely Megastrike. I haven't used JJ's yet so I can't speak to it. I have tried a spray on garlic scent and that was a fail; it just didn't last. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I still dont use any-I still dont fish -I :-[ :'( :'( still have no life Quote
Dixon Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Bobby stop messing around. You fish all the time. Quote
