I have been wanting to get a setup for punching. What would you recommend as a good rod/reel combo? I was thinking about an Abu Garcia vendetta heavy action rod but have no idea on a good baitcaster to go with it, any ideas, tips, and info you can share would be great.

Revo sx I use my revo sx with veritas 7'6MHF for fliping pitching and punching with a 3/4oz tungsten weight.

7'11 Loomis BCFR 954 GLX and a Curado 200e7 with 65# sufix braid. Thats on the high end of the spectrum, but any heavy/fast rod with a high speed reel will do. The high speed reel is a must have to move the fish out of the grass quickly.

whats your budget

100 bux citica

150 curado 200e7

250 revo premier/zillion

350 revo mgx when it comes out

You need a long heavy rod to fish heavy cover, strong line, and lift big fish out of nasty places. I prefer a high speed reel but since you often aren't even making casts but just flipping, a reel like a Citica or Revo S would probably work fine for you. Get some good 65lb braid and heavy tungsten weights and some big grass jigs and go to work, and sometimes it does feels like work.

My punching setup is Revo STX/Custom St Croix Avid flipping stix spooled with 50lb braid.

Rod: Falcon BuCoo 7' Heavy

Reel: New Shimano Citica 200E or Used Shimano Curado 200E7

That would be a nice setup with a great value. It should be $200 or less and will suit your needs well.

That's basically a whippy MH. I would never use that rod for punching. I don't know where you're from or what you define as "punching", but that would snap real quick here.

A great rod for punching is the Dobyns Champion 805FLIP.

A good punching setup would be a st. croix LTB or Extreme 7'11' HMF, with a revo premier 7.1:1. Or if you don't want to spend that much money, you can go with the same rod in the Mojo Line up with a Revo S.

Why doesn't some rod maker build a punching specific rod, where a reel is unnecessary? Just something to tie your braid to, and a really comfortable grip. That would be really cool.

Its not whippy at all. Its pretty stout. Its a true heavy with some backbone. I punched with it extensively in the thickest milfoil of the potomac and not one problem. Never snapped either.

I dont think he wants to spend 200$ on a Dobyns either.

Jus' Sayin'.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Well, it wouldn't last very long where I flip and punch. Have either of you ever fished a 5 power Dobyns rod? That is some SERIOUS backbone.

If it works for you, great. It isn't my preference though.

The mat doesn't get too bad up here in Michigan. I have used my dads DX 703c and Core 100MG combo for plastics and it's nice but I don't see the need for having such a great rod for punching.

I think the 7'6 H Vendetta would be fine...I personally do see the need.

A DX795 / Zillion Type R+ would be one filthy punching combo.

What does a Zillion Type-R offer you that something else wouldn't?

Seriously, a $400 reel for a skill where you won't even be reeling in, LOL.

OK, for the six feet of line, that 32 IPT is going to make all the difference.

A Citica with some Carbontex has more stopping power, and weighs an ounce less. Better to impress with your catch than your gear.

Now, for rods....Ehh, it only needs to me sensitive enough. My main criteria is a moderate to mod. fast action, to spread the setrss across the whole blank. And, yeah, it's got to be XXXH, like my Deep South flipping stick.

I agree with the rod choice, I flip and punch with the 7'11" H/MF Mojo. You could haul a small car out from under the thickest milfoil mats around here with that rod. Mine has a Revo S on it as well. Great minds think alike :D

What do ya'll think about Lews reels? Would that be a good one for punching, i had my eye on one earlier.

They have a great value. The Lews Speed Spool and the Shimano Citica are great $100 reels. I have also heard good things about the Tournament MG.

Pitching and frogs as well! How sensitive us the DS flipping rod?

Hey I love my Type R for punching. To each there own. A long rod and like J franchise said xxxh! I personally upgraded to the 7'11" HMF St. Croix extreme for punching, its a very sexy stick. I never used the mojo but I'm sure it can rip out stumps to. So the mojo is recommendation and you can use. St. Croixs upgrade program later if you feel like you want something better. Though honestly I don't remember any of the rod lineup below the extreme off hand

Sensitive enough. I've caught six fish over 6 with it.

Now, if you're talking multi-purpose, that would be a different question, not what the OP asked. Anytime you combine, you might be making a compromise.

I still say, someone design a rod, with a comfortable handle, that can hold a bit of line - fixed, locked in - and not require a reel. A specific punching rod. That would be awesome.

My buddy had that rod. Really nice, not as heavy powered as my Deep South, but plenty heavy, and sensitive enough to use for other techniques.
