Going to be fishing some tournaments at Lake Talquin after the first of the year, any advice to help out a bass fishing novice?

Regardless of the time of year, it's always a good idea to have a Carolina Rig close to hand @ Lake Talquin. The larger fish are usually still hanging out deep in the old river channel bends during the coldest part of the new year, but @Talquin there are also always a few shallow fish, too. You can catch either with the C/Rig. If its been raining and the water is murky, they will bite black, black emerald, or green pumpkin soft plastics, but if the water is pretty clear they should go for watermelon red or junebug red when the sun is out. Lately the hot color has been Plum Apple or Plum Crazy, but the old standbys will usually come through for you. Our old friend Dewey swears by Bass Assassin Black/Blue Tail, Texas rigged. Square-billed crank baits in shallow water and jerkbaits will usually work in Jan/Feb, too, but you need to really slow them down. If the winter is mild, some of the little bucks will start beding toward the end of Feb, and a good many will be on beds in early March. Look to the azaleas - when they start blooming bass will be bedding on Talquin. At that point, forget the deep stuff and head for the backs of the creeks.

Hope that helps.
