jmed999 Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 My fluoro leader tied to my braid is only about 18 inches. How long is yours? What length do you think works best? Thanks! Quote
bassinbrian Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I make mine around 3 ft, sometimes ill go longer if i know ill be throwing in heavier cover were ill need to retie more often. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 Long enough to go deep. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 My fluoro leader is a 75 yard topshot. Quote
gobig Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I do the same as bassclary, the length of the rod. Once it gets down to about 4ft I tie on a new one. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 I have about 12' on my DS rods. Quote
jmed999 Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 Why do you guys use the length of your rod? Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 Why do you guys use the length of your rod? Don't have have to tie a new leader on as often. Quote
Gavin Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Two arms length....6' approximately. Retie when it gets down to 4' or so. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 About 15-18", I use swivels, except when fishing for species that will hit the swivel as readily as the bait ( spanish mackerel). For 99% of my fishing I don't see the point of a long leader and tieing line to line. Quote
jignfule Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 rod length then dwindle it down to 18" before retie Quote
brushhoggin Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I do the same as bassclary, the length of the rod. Once it gets down to about 4ft I tie on a new one. how come? if you don't mind me asking Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 12, 2011 Super User Posted August 12, 2011 Two arms length....6' approximately. Retie when it gets down to 4' or so. I agree. I like to have the joint knot either on the reel spool or before the first eye of the rod. This way the knot gets into 'spinning' mode quicker with less drag going through the eyes. Quote
LWD Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 12-18 inch how do you all cast with such a long leader? Don't you have your sinker hitting the tip pole and the long leader make it harder to cast? Quote
Jaheff Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 how come? if you don't mind me asking So your line to line knot doesn't go through your levelwind. Quote

Sinkers hitting the rod while casting does not happen very often, even if using a fish finder rig and that's an uncommon bass set up. Quote
