bass wrangler569 Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 So I've always been a gammy guy but that gammy vs owner thread a few weeks ago got me interested in trying owner hooks. Well, I picked up a pack and tried 'em out this past Friday, and all I can say is... wow. I can't believe how much stronger and sharper they are than the gammys. I was fishing brush hogs on 3/0 wide gaps and 4/0 twistlocks and I stuck every fish that bit. I don't think I'll be buying anymore gammy hooks in the future! Quote
Jake. Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I made the switch a couple of months ago. Owners rule. Quote

I have had a lot of fish bend gammys though. So far the owner hooks I've used haven't bent at all and they seem to stay sharper a lot longer. Quote
aarogb Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I have always thought the that Gammy's were the sharpest but Owner's were the strongest. Quote

Only down side is they ain't cheap.I always try to catch them on sale, which is rare most of the time. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I prefer Owners to all others... But use them infrequently... I use Strike King Saber Points for casual use... Quote
frogtog Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I always thought they were the same hook from the same co. : Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 I have always thought the that Gammy's were the sharpest but Owner's were the strongest. Gamakatsu sharpness is somewhat of an illusion. Their hooks have a fine point that rolls over very easily. Quote

Super User burleytog Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 Eagle Claw Lazor Sharp, made in the USA!!!....BABY!!! Eagle Claw hooks aren't bad, but they aren't near the quality of Owner or Gamakatsu. The QC just isn't there. Quote

Their hooks have a fine point that rolls over very easily. You can say that again!! Gammy's are also the ONLY hook (other than the time I tried the Banjo minnow) that I have straightened. It's happened more than once and always with a Gammy, including a Tuna that would have brought me at least 4-5k. (Yea, that one left a sour taste in my mouth) I've been an Owner user for a good 5 yrs now. After some discussion w/ Owner, the ST's will be the hooks that come with my Working Girl Wake Baits. Talk about a sticky hook, holy cow! I will also be selling them separately for .75 ea instead of the typical $1-2 as found in the shops. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Agree with LBH. Seems to me (maybe just me) gammy's have gotten a little thinner/weaker over the past few years. Owners are ridiculously sharp & hold the point longer. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 With all the kudos for Owner Hooks, I picked up a couple of packs of 5/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks. I'm sure I'll like them as much as everyone else that has commented here. However, I have been using a variety of Gamakatsu Hooks for the past decade or so. I have never had an issue of any kind; never straightened a hook or broken one. 8-) Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 And to think, Native Americans used bone for hooks... Quote

The QC just isn't there. Here is Eagle Claw for you: Owners are the best hooks on the market. But I still use Gammys because they are cheaper. Quote
