Locked Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I'm not exactly sure what happend... I was dragging a jig when I felt a bump. My jig was in about 18fow and roughly 15 yards out. So.. I gave a nice rip on the hookset, but no fish. As I am going to reel in the slack, I can feel it grinding... Then I notice that the spool isn't spinning. So now I can pull line out with the reel engaged, and it makes a grinding/clicking noise. It is a 120 dollar johnny morris signature series reel. What are your guys opinions on the situation? Send it out to DVT? Look for a pro qualifier for cheap? Any advice is appreciated. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 9, 2011 Super User Posted August 9, 2011 Return it to BPS and get a Cruado in its place. You will not be sorry. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted August 9, 2011 Super User Posted August 9, 2011 id guess the yoke is no longer holding the pinion gear in place. just a guess though. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 9, 2011 Super User Posted August 9, 2011 i'd say your pinion gear is shot. Return it to BPS and get a new one or a Curado like mentioned. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted August 9, 2011 Super User Posted August 9, 2011 why not just get it fixed ? Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 9, 2011 Super User Posted August 9, 2011 Hey dodgeguy, hope you are doing well and enjoying the summer fishing. I have not had good luck with BPS baitcasters and that is why I suggested returning the reel and upgrading to a Shimano. The last time I returned a Johnny Morris baitcaster to BPS the fishing guy told me that the reels are not holding up as expected and he said to get a Curado in its place, which I did. Only have two BPS spinning reels I use when fun fishing. I do not know the company building the BPS reels but I am sure someone on this site will tell us. And then we have to ask if the inner workings are the same as the manufacturer's specs or are they BPS specs. Go with Abu or Shimano and your reel problems can be reduced over the years. Quote

I'm almost sure BPS contracts Pflueger out, but not 100% positive. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Pure Fishing (ABU, Pflueger..) makes the BPS reels. If you decide to have it fixed I'll be happy to take a look. Trading it in is an option if you can get full value. I can't see just chucking it though. Quote
Locked Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 The reel in question is over a year old and has landed over a hundred fish, including a few 20lb+ catfish and carp. I didn't have a single problem with either of my bps reels until this happened yesterday. Even though the reel is over a year old, will I still be able to exchange it? In the mean time, I've decided to pick up a 201e7 to replace it. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 You'll have to check with BPS about any options with them. Sounds like the reel has performed well up to now. Quote

I'm happy with how the reel has performed. I'm obviously not happy about it breaking, but I didn't expect it to last forever. So, I can't complain. Quote
rubba bubba Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 If you pull up on the thumb bar and crank at the same time(even though the thumb bar is no longer depressed, pull it up anyways), does it engage and the spool spin? Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 Pure Fishing (ABU, Pflueger..) makes the BPS reels. No longer true. They used to, however BPS now owns all of their own tooling and utilizes an OEM contract in Korea to make the vast majority of their reels. End result is that BPS reels are their specs with the manufacturing process controlled wholly by them. In terms of longevity, it is true that they've been questionable. The Carbon Black and Elite being two that have been problematic. The Signature 2 and Pro Qualifier, however, have been relatively problem free. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 Assuming the reel is off warranty and you're on your own I would weigh the cost of repair against a new replacement, either the same reel or another brand. It may not be worth to fix it. Quote

David301 Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I own 2 of the J.M. sig reels for over 1 year with no issues. But I also do a complete clean and inspect every 3 months. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Shimano is good stuff but it is not the all to end all on being problem free. I bought a a Curado ( D I think ) and it had problems very early on ( within 3 months which were mostly winter). I sent it to Shimano for reapair with a very detailed description. The returned it w/o directly talking to me saying that nothing was wrong with it. They did call but their english was poor and they only left a voice mail. The voice mail was hard to understand making it very hard to contact that person. By the time I got through the run-around they had already shipped the reel. I had my fishing buddy ( Farmpond1 ) listen to it and he was stunned when he heard it. I have owned the previous generation Symetre and that was a great reel (wish I never sold it). I own multiple Pflueger spinning reels that I've had for 3-5 years and I love them. I've never had a problem with any of them. I have one Pflueger baitcaster ( Supreme ) & it worked beautiful for a couple of years. It is starting to make some noise though. This probably needs some minor maintenance due to the lack of a p/m ( probably my mistake on that ). FFI - AKA Matt C Quote
