A 7' MH/F rod will handle those techniques well. It will also excel in a lot of other situations.

If you want a new rod I would look at the Veritas, Powell Max, the new Compre, etc.

Used rod: You will have more and better options. I would go used on this forum, but I understand it can be hard when you're 14 to do an online purchase with another member if your parents have to do the dirty work.

Powell Max or new Compre for sure. Im not sold on the Abba-dabba-do line. I think they're all flash.

Most of us have a tendency to think "casting". You didn't mention the type of rod you wanted. Here's one possibility for you. http://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/fishing-rods/casting-rods/freshwater/shimano/crucial.html

You may not find this next link searching. I didn't. Had to go to my 'trash' to find it since I wasn't currently interested in anything on this link. You might be. Got it because I signed up for their newsletter. Believe these are the discontinued models. A 6'10" MH Shimano Compre normally $99.99 for $64.99 may be exactly what you are looking for. Compres always seem to receive excellent feedback from users.

There are also spinning rods on sale at this link if that is what you prefer.

Good luck. let us know what you decide to buy.

My Vendetta 7'3 H/XF is an awesome rod for the money. I got it for free though. Great, cheap frog rod. It has since been replaced with a Dobyns, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

I'm more and more impressed by the Veritas as time goes on. They're incredibly light weight and seem to have excellent characteristics. I've been fishing a couple of them as review rods lately, and am not at all unhappy with their performance. I'd very likely spend the $100 on a Veritas before I would a Carbonlite.

Also, don't jump in and buy the first thing that you get your hands on. You'll see some great rods for a reasonable price as the season winds down. I have four or five, possibly six or seven even, that I know I'm selling. There are others that will have some quality gear for sale, too. Keep your eyes on the market place and see what comes up. Most of the people are going to be willing to deal a little on the rods, sometimes you get a great bargain in the Marketplace.

The Abu line just doesn't feel good to me. I tried the Vendetta's and they felt clumsy, clunky, very tip heavy, and lacked in the sensitivity department. Plus they all look ugly :P The Veritas felt the same way when I fooled around with them in the store, but have never fished the veritas or any other abu rod besides the Vendetta. So, I guess first impressions are lasting, amd i'm being a bit unfair. I also tend to think Abu garcia's products are over-rated. Not saying they are bad products for the money. Dont get me wrong, the Revo reels, especially the newer year models are great reels. But I feel people give them more credit than they should. I feel their are better products out there in the same price range, while their are a few worse.

Of course, this is just solely my opinion and do not express those of Bass Resource.

I really like my Bass Pro Extreme Rods and I use a 6'6" MH for my T-rigs

If possible, look at a few you may potentially want online, read the reviews on here and elsewhere, and then narrow it down to 3 rods to go take a look at in person. As far as Abu goes, I actually really like my Veritas rod. It's obviously not on par with my GLX, Dobyns Champion Extreme, or St Croix LTB... but then again it's not supposed to be. There are some nice quality rods in your price point, and the Veritas is one of them.

The Shimano Compre is a great rod for the money but the Abu rods get good reviews for the most part. St.Croix Premiers a little heavier but they were my first nicer rods and served me well, still fish with a few of them even.
