Super User Lund Explorer Posted August 3, 2011 Super User Posted August 3, 2011 So, last night we had a severe thunderstorm form up over the top of our little rurual county and it put on quite a light show. Watching the 11pm news, the weatherman came on to say that in the last hour that over 30,000 lighting bolts had been recorded in the county..... 30,000! That's over 500 every minute. In a square shaped county, 24 miles by 24 miles. 576 square miles in size, that's 52 lighting strikes per/sq. mile. Just over one minute per/strike, per/mile for an hour. It was almost an afterthought that it also dropped 3-4 inches of rain in that same hour, and just under 6 inches in the two hours or so before the storm left. So far as I've gathered, there were two homes that caught fire, one factory that took a direct hit and gave over 300 people a day off in the middle of the week, and one fax machine in Rodney that no longer works. But 30,000 lighting strikes in one hour? Makes me happy I wasn't on the lake! Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted August 3, 2011 Super User Posted August 3, 2011 We had the same thing but in 2 small towns not the county Sunday night/Monday morning. I thought I was in a nightclub it was non stop lightning but no thunder well not as much as lightning. My wife was freaking out because it was at 3am the morning she was schedualed to have her c section and she hates storms. Quote
Fish Chris Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Question Lightening, How much is too much? Answer > Even one small bolt is too much, if it hits you square on the head LOL Here a couple of my first ever lightening shots I took while in LA, a month ago... Peace, Fish Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted August 4, 2011 Super User Posted August 4, 2011 Steve, it's our current government's way of telling you that they want you to go fishing with an aluminum pole. One less guy on Medicare, helping to balance the budget. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 4, 2011 Super User Posted August 4, 2011 Lightning can strike up to five miles from the storm. And would you believe there we are, in a boat in the middle of a lake holding a rod in our hands that has a metal tip. Makes sense to me if the bass are biting. Quote

The last one we had sounded very similar to yours. It ain't no joke....I've never ,never been scared of a storm till that day.Heck I stood outside down in Texas when a tornado went through. The lighting was so close and so many that it scared my wife and kid so badly they wouldn't get out of the car.I had to run up to the house to open the door so they had a clear shot straight into the house without delay.I almost crapped myself on that trip to the house. Lighting went just over my head when I was trying to get the door open. I ended up ducking down on the steps. It was not a pleasant experience. And since I work with steel I had it in my head I was probably attracting any lighting.Silly thought,yeah...but that's how bad it even got me. And I love storms.....except for that one time. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 5, 2011 Super User Posted August 5, 2011 One thing we an abundance of in Florida is lighting strikes. Lightning is serious business. Quote

Captain Obvious Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I saw some of the weirdest lighting ever about a month ago. It was striking so fast that it was constantly light outside. Looked like massive camera shots being taken during a major event. On a side note,If i see lighting and I'm on the water I head for shelter asap. Capt.O Quote
