took my son and two of my former students fishing today. we first went to lox, but with these young kids and all of the vegetation, i was constantly de-weeding baits and they were starting to become frustrated. i decided to pull out and head over to the hillsboro canal to cath some snakeheads and cichlids. we caught a couple of cichlids and this nice 4 pounder. could not believe my eyes, but there was a dead hog in the water. a big gator must have grabbed him and ate most of the body. in the pic, you can kinda see the hogs head. it was a cheezy pic because of my camera phone.

Hogs will swim, gators will grab them.

Looks like the kids had a good time. Good job on the fishing and taking the little guys.

just west of lyons road. that whole stretch has fish, especially after they chopped those pine trees down by nbp. always catch good ones there.

I fished Hillsboro yesterday morning since it was overcast (and not so freaking hot). I caught 3 big snakeheads, a 3lb bass and a 4 lb bass on topwater. There was lots of floating grass to deal with but you can't complain about catching quality fish in August.

Is there a public area in that same vicinity just North of Lyons road that you can fish from the shore? If so, where do you park? Thanks.

It sucks to not have a boat, but this too shall pass.

Just by viewing a map there is ballfield to the south of the canal with public parking just a short walk. On the south side of the canal heading west that area would be county property and available for fishing. I've never been there in person so I don't know what's it like.

I see the area you're talking about. I looked at the ball park too, but didn't think about parking there. Makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Once the weather starts cooling down I may try that area, it's only 20 minute ride for me.

Fished the south side of the canal where all the ball fields were. Turns out its North Broward Preparatory School. The guard let me in since school is not in session, but probably won't after school starts. Thought I should let you know.

Only caught one. but it was a nice four pounder. Had several other strikes but didn't get the hook set. I'm a bass fishing noob, so I was happy.

Where did you launch your boat?

Villages of Hillsboro Park Hillsboro Canal Freshwater

4111 N.W. 6th Street, Hillsborough Canal, west of Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach 954-426-6898
Fee: No charge
Hours: Dawn to dusk (only for small boats)

1 single ramp
14 parking spaces

my rule of thumb is if the water is moving, go somewhere else. if its not, throw swim jigs by every clump of pads you see. good luck
