Mabye it's not too bad of a price if everyone pitches in. I'd be willing to. Sean, did you find anything out?

I popped today at lunch to find the visitor's center is only open from 12-5 on the weekends. :( I'm planning on heading over there this weekend to get all the info.

Just checking into see if anything new has happened. Looks like I will be working until 10:00PM on October 1. I assume the get together will be on October 2. We will need fairly detailed directions to the spot where everybody will be gathering. I am pretty sure we could find the park but beyond that I'm not sure. We have never been to Black Hills. Any help would be appreciated. Also I would still be intersted in providing any help with any finds needed for the get together. If the thing gets postponed or cancelled that would be disappointing but understandable too. As for fishing, my guess is we would be shore fishing.

I can definitely post directions. The goal would be to have enough boats for everyone to be able off the shore.

Thanks for the heads up Chris.

So the head count I have right now is 12. 5 with boats and 7 without. With Hellbenderman not able to make it on the 2nd, that drops the count, for that day to 11 and down a boat too. So the question is, do we keep the same date (where the majority would definitely fall in the non-boater section) or move it to mid-october to help even out the numbers so everyone can has the opportunity to fish out of a boat? Or do move it to spring time?

As I mentioned before, this get together is open to anyone. If you're interested in joining us, please let us know!

Still in but I need to get a flat tire fixed on my boat trailer first.

For those who have never fished Black Hills here are my top ten lures overall fishing there the past 6 years for bass in no particular order.

1. Kinami senko 4" Natural shad

2. Fluke white or shad colored

3. Baby brush hog green pumkin

4. Shakeyhead worm GP or watermelon

5. 5/16oz GP Eakins style jig with GP 3" Berkley chigger craw trailer

6. Small drop shot worm/shad

7. Double nickel willow shad colored spinnerbait

8. RC 1.5 silent crankbait

9. Pop-R

10. 3/4oz Football jig (works around bridge)

Ok, finally some success on getting to the visitor's center to get the information on the pavilion. So here's what I found out:

There's 2 size pavilions at Black Hills (large and small). The small ones hold a maximum of 40 people (which at current count what we'd get). There is a $125 non-refundable deposit plus a $150 refundable deposit as well. $275 would be due at the time the reservation is made. There are 6 picnic tables and 1 grill at the small pavilions.

Other information: The maximum capacity counts are enforced so we can only can only reserve a pavilion for that amount or we'd have to upgrade to the larger one which is more expensive. Once the reservation is made, the fee is non-refundable. It is rain or shine. A $48 fee is required for all reservation changes (at least 1 week in advance). No alcohol of any kind is permitted at the park shelter. Large amounts of garbage must be taken completely out of the park for proper disposal. All cars must park in the designated parking spaces (no parking in the grass). Charcoal fires only, no gas grills and no personal grills. Gas grills, wood burning fires and generators are prohibited. Two thirds of the participants must be from Montgomery or Prince George's counties (will look into this more if we decide to do this). I was also given the name of the park manager (who's an avid fisherman as well) to see about parking the boats in the parking lot at the pavilion once we're done fishing.

With the current count at 12, money needed per person would be $22.92 to rent the pavilion. $12.50 per person would be refunded as long as we met the criteria for the refund.

Looks like I covered all the info I received. Let me know what everyone thinks.

For the kind of money they are asking for and potentially losing the deposit due to rain I do not see it being worth it...

All sounds good to me. Hope you are counting me and my son. Count me in for any funds for the pavilion. If we fish from a boat that's OK too but not necessary. As for the date...any Sunday is good for us. Again thanks for taking the time and effort to get things organized.

sounds good to me, hopefully most folks are from right county if we are gonna make this happen.

Not sure my son and I can help with the residence thing. We're not even from the right state. We could miss the get-togther especially if we hurt your residence count.

Here's the current head count, boat status and a guess on what county everyone is from. Obviously, please correct me if I'm wrong!

basser89 (boat) - Washington county

BrianinMD - Montgomery county

KenLattimore - Montgomery county

dcfpipeman (boat) - Frederick county

Munkin (boat) - Washington county

Slaynbass365 - Montgomery county

Fat Boy (+1) - Frederick county

WV (and son) - Jefferson county (WV)

Lee.MD - Howard county

Hellbenderman (boat) - Montgomery county

So IF my initial guess is correct, to reserve a pavilion, we're way short on Montgomery and PG county residents. This doesn't mean that we can't still do the get together and use a pavilion that is not reserved. I would probably still need to check in with the park manager on towing the boats into the parking lots for the pavilions just to let him know.

As mentioned before, Hellbenderman can't do the 2nd, so I still need everyone's feedback on when to hold the event.

The 16th would be OK for us. Once again thanks for the effort putting the meeting together. :)

I am ok with the 16th, but it is going to be tough fishing that late in Oct.

Hey guys, good to see things are coming together for the meet. I am still in....and any date will work for me. My boat status has not changed, and I am still looking to be a rider- if possible.

I like the idea of finding a vacant pavillion, save the money and avoid losing the deposit. There's almost always empty areas there, and if nothing else I am sure most of us would be fine with just meeting out on the water!

Hey guys, I might not be able to make it as my wife works ecery other weekend and those are the weekends. I'll check into babysitting options, but unfortunately, I mught be sitting htis one out. Hopefully I can work something out!

Posted

I'm guessing this weekend is off. Would it be better for everyone to just put the get-together off until the spring? Looks like some people have conflicts for a variety of reasons and some have concerns about the fishing that late. Plus it would give everyone a long time to make plans. We have never been to Black Hills so we're not sure how good the fishing would be in the spring either. I am open to any time and any place that suits everyone else.

wv, my understanding was the date was being changed to the 16th.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it on that date now. If everyone still wants to get together on that date, I'll still contact the park manager to give him the heads up the get together is going on as well as getting permission to park the boats in the parking lot in the park (when using the pavilion. I can still post the directions to get the park and where to meet up in the park as well.

I apologize for the short notice for me backing out.

Sorry I haven't posted much lately. My work has been busy this time of year and my free time this past two weeks has been pretty much consumed by resting up for work the next day, so I haven't been on the PC much. I've been checking the posts briefly to keep up though.

Any other weekends good for you Sean, everyone?

Oh yeah, before I forget, I live in Montgomery County, so if the residency is an issue, that helps a little. I can throw a rock and hit Frederick County (well, assuming my arm is still strong as it used to be) :D

I'm not worried about the fishing in BH in October or even November. The lake traffic tens to settle down a bit. Fall is generally good, and even on cold front days the bass still seem to hit. Weather could be an issue though, but the bass should be willing.

I could be in for a spring trip too.

Here's another thought, what about meeting up at a restaurant or something, maybe breakfast before fishing or dinner afterwards rather than renting a pavilion? I was thinking maybe Golden Corral or something cheap like that, or Buffalo Wild Wings maybe?

If all goes well I will have my new boat ready by the 16th, picked up a 2000 Ranger 520vx Comanche yesterday. Only issue is the two small marker lights on the front of the trailer fenders are out. Previously owner said they are intermittent. So much rain not sure when I can look at them. If anyone knows a decent inspection place near Damascus please let me know. May just take it in and let them fix them and inspect it.

Trailer wiring is stone simple. If you'd like, I can take a look at it for you/with you...I'm over in Germantown. The rain doesnt bother me much unless its pouring. As far as an inspector goes, I have no idea.

I think it would be better if you were there since you seem to to know most people either directltly or in-directly. I've said before we are open to any Sunday dates and places. As for directions...I've been looking at maps and it would be best for us to go 340 to Brunswick and got to 15 and take 28 South from Point of Rocks. I don't like interstate travel. Any directions from 28 to the park would be good. Better would be directions in the park itself. I can sympethize with any conflicts especially work-related. Since January we have been short 1 or 2 employes and somtimes 3. I've beenw roking 6 days most of the year. If the store was open on Sunday...it may have been 7 days. ;) When Sunday comes I ususlly am pretty tired. I still think a get-together would be a good idea...at a fishing spot or a restaurant. We haven't fished much past Labor Day at all. I n fact I used to fish a great deal as a teenager and basically quit for about 40 years. When my son got about 12 years old fishing became a way to spend time together. Fishing was good...catching fish was a bonus for us. We like to fish together but are by no means real knowledgeble about fishing and a get-togther would a learning experience for us. Thanks again for taking the time and making the effort.

From 28 its very simple. Make a left onto Germantown Rd (rt 118), and follow it all the way to the end and make a left onto N. Frederick Ave (rt 355). After a few miles you make a left onto West Old Baltimore Rd, and a little bit down that road you make a left into the park. The boat launch is right off the main park road I believe, off to the right after you pass the park office.

Sorry slaynbass365, I did not see your post until I was over at the boat. I took a quick look but could not figure out it, unfortunately it started raining so did not have much time anyway. I decided to take it to Maryland Offshore, there is a guy there my club highly recommends. They will fix the lights, give it a look over and take it for the inspection. Under a time crunch to get the previous owner his tags back so this is my best option right now.

WV, not to confuse things but if you come down 28 there is a right turn onto 117 if you take that it will run you right into the lake. When you get to a stop sign at a T intersection take a left this is 121. You will pass over the lake, about 3 miles up there is a set of S turns with Old Baltimore RD in the middle (its right after a big set of open fields on your right. Take the right onto Old Baltimore RD and the park entrance is on your right. The boat ramp is the first right after pass by the little building in the middle of the road.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I am selling one of my reels that I never use. I got it as a back up in july, used it twice and it's been in the closet ever since. It's a Pinnacle Ultra Balance baitcast reel with 50lb power pro braid on it. I'm looking to get $30 for it, and im in germantown. Offers/trades accepted...
