Robert Riley Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 All right, so im looking to set up a medium spinning finesse rig. This is mainly about the hardware, reel, rod, line too. So as far as the reel goes, i've getting a Plfueger Supreme XT, im probably 7.2 oz one, with the 6.2:1 ratio. And as far as rods go, i was looking at the Abu Garcia Veritas, in a Medium action, either 6'6 or 7'. I'm also curious if the Verdict is worth the extra $30. And for line, most likely fluoro, mainly bc i've heard it the good stuff for finesse. But i hav yet to find a fluoro that i havent had trouble with (i've used Berkeley, and Vicious Elite). So yeah, just fire away, feel free to just give me tips on just one from that long list. Any tips are much appreciated! -Robert PS: i dont really need tackle(lures and stuff) advice, but hey, shoot. ChiCityBasser Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 As far as the flouro goes try to stay around 6-8lbs test for your spinning setup and you should have no problems. I stick with 6 lbs on my spinning setups with KVD line & lure treatment every now and the. I also have some spinning setups with 30# braid with no leader since the majority of the waters I fish here near chicago are stained. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 31, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 31, 2011 I was looking at that same reel and will probably get it when I get some money saved up for it, sweet feeling reel for sure. Haven't fished that particular rod but I'm sure either one would work just fine for you. As for the line I have no doubt that you had trouble with Vanish or Vicious. Vanish just sucks and Vicious is really stiff and difficult to use on a spinning reel. Pop for some Seaguar InvisX and you'll be much happier. Just put some filler mono on the reel first and only use 30-50 yards of floro at a time to make the spool last a lot longer! Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 Sounds like you're on the right path and I definitely second the recommendations of Invizx (8#) with KVD L&L conditioner every time out. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 (Let me know how you guys like that reel will you. Thinking about popping for one myself, same application, love me some 4" senkos!) Not sure about the $30 for a Verdict. I have heard of some problems with Vertias though. Are you dead set on a Abu Garcia rod? As far as line goes, I haven't used the Insix, but have heard a lot of people really like it. PS welcome to the forum Robert. Quote
Super User deep Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 If I were you, I'd spend a little more on the rod, and get a Shimano Crucial or a Powell (Max or Endurance). I tried the Dobyns Savvy too, but found that I like extra-fast action for bottom contact baits. I don't know anything about the Flooger, I guess it's a good reel. But if you're on a tight budget, spend more on the rod and skimp on the reel. All you need is a good drag system, and a fast IPT. Most rods would balance better with a heavier reel too. Consider using braid with a leader for added sensitivity. I'm not too fond of fluoro (too much stretch), but plenty of folks are. Good luck! Quote
Flywatersmallie Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I have that same reel, Supreme XT 9230, well 2 of them.... I have them on a Dobyns DX701 and DX702. I love them! Very light, smooth and solid feeling. I've been using mine since early spring and no issues. I don't think you could go wrong. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Fly, I noticed that is the smaller of the two reels capable of holding 8# line. What line are you using on your reels? (I generally use 8# copoly lines). Sorry, not trying to high-jack this thread. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Hey Rob, I have a very similar set up to what your looking for and like it a lot. My reel is a patriarch but still similar to the supreme XT. My rod is the 6"9 ML/XF veritas. I use it for shakey head, neko rigs, and dropshot. I really like the veritas and have had no problems with it. For every bad story on this site you can find two people who love them so if you like them don't be scared. The only thing I would say is stay away from the 7" med. I don't know if you have seen it in person or just the internet but for some reason it is way to thick. I was planning on buying it for a different combo but once I saw it I thought no way. I ended going with the 6"6 m/xf which has a much more appropriate thickness although still a little thicker than you light expect from a med action rod. It's about the same as my MH cumara casting rod. As for the line I use 6# trilene 100% on a 30 size patriarch and have no problems. Just make sure to leave plenty of room on the spool and manually flip the bail with your hand and you should be ok. Quote

I've used a similar set-up, except a Pflueger Patriarch XT and a Veritas 6'6" medium. I don't think you'll be disappointed especially if you pay no attention to the rumor repeaters, some of whom have already checked in. Quote
Robert Riley Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 Thanks y'all. This forum is pretty cool, the amount of people that actually read it and reply is the best part! So as far as the tackle goes, im not really set on anything, but im liking where this is going. I probably wont be buying anything until later this fall, so plenty of time to make up my mind. I will most def try the invizx line though. Quote

Wow, i have never heard of Powell Rods, but i like what I see! I'm looking at the max, primarily the XF 7 footer. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Powell rods are pretty good, I got an Endurance series spin rod. you might want to check out www.tackletour.com A web site that tests and evaulates fishing tackle. Good luck! Saw your post about that Pfluger reel, I was thinking about getting the same one. Thanks for posting that question. Quote
s13john Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 I've got a powell wacky rod. I love it it's a medium extra fast. Not so good for dropshot though Quote
breezy Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Have you held the Veritas rods you're looking at in store with a reel mounted? I have a casting rod I've been happy with (although I like the Carbonlite more) but think the spinning rods are uncomfortable. The metal nut for the reel seat aggravates me on the casting rod, but it is outright irritating and uncomfortable on the spinning rods. May be the way I hold the rod, reel I used, something else but I would at least recommend trying it out in store first. As stated above, the 7' Med seems like a very stout rod with a thick blank from handling it in-store. I don't own a Powell but they get great reviews and would definitely be a step up from the Veritas. If you want to stay in the $100 price range then definitely look at a Carbonlite--I have a casting model and would pick it before a lot of rods costing 50% more. If you're looking at Powells I would also have to recommend you check out Dobyns (Savvy in your price range). I own several Savvy and Champion models, the Champion 702sf is one of the best rods I have used and fishes a shaky head/dropshot very well. They're all good choices, just try and handle each one (w/ reel mounted) and decide what feels best. Quote
tjc76 Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 I purchased a Veritas 7 ft Medium/fast two weeks ago for river smallie fishing and I couldn't be happier with it. I have been throwing mostly soft plastics like keitech swing impacts, power team craw doerves and senkos with it. My local retailer has coupons for 25 off $100, so for $75, i could not turn this rod down. Mine is matched to a Shimano Symetre 2500. I am very happy with it. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 FYI, there's a Powell Max Spinning rod for sale at a good price now in the Flea market thread. Quote
