Hello All,

I've built a fishing app to track/record info about a fish when it's caught, along with a lot more, that I've released to the Android Market. I won't post the name of the app as I'm not sure if it's permitted by the board rules/regulations to promote it, unless a moderator were to chime in and say it was ok.

What I wanted to do is to get input from fellow anglers on what you would love to see in a fishing app for your phone. I'm working on the 2nd version of the app right now and thinking of new features to build in to it.

What would your fishing app wish list be?

Every app I have used takes too many steps to 'log' everything. Would be cool if you could take a photo of a fish, a spot, whatever... and it logs the GPS coordinates and some weather information (I know that part can be done, I've seen it on another app), then you input whatever info you want and you're done.

I'd have it so when you first start fishing, you can enter what bait your using, and then it asks something like "was this fish caught on "whatever bait you input at the beginning?"" if yes, it's done, if no, you get a dropdown menu of baits you've inputted before, a text box to enter a new one or a list of generic ones.

There's a lot of good apps out there now, they are all just too much work to log fish, so I end up never using them. Make it quick and simple.

I 100% agree. The ones I have tried takes FORVER to set coordinates. Its quicker to set a waypoint on my gps/fish finder than it is with most apps. But i'm sure that will change

I like nates idea with the pic I kinda do that now. I snap a pic of every fish then when I get home I go back threw the pics and look at the time stamp and then I got the exact time it was and I usually remember the lure and I have a 6in 3 ring binder I keep em all in seperated by the year and type of fish(smb, lmb, pike) it would be nice to have it all on my droid so I can have it on me 24/7.

endless - check out Time2Fish Free... I use it and it's pretty good at pinning the major feeding times down.

GrundleLove - My phone was HORRIBLE at getting my GPS coordinates, but since I got my Gingerbread update, it's been better (still slow though).

The best app I had was called CreelCard... First, it's built by someone in the UK, so you have to edit the fish species, which takes forever on your phone. The lures it had was like worm, fly, maggots and something else... Ok, now you have to add all your lures in. Every time you caught a fish and took a photo of it, you have to first enter the details (depth, conditions, any notes), then you go to the next screen and pick the lure... Needs to be a simple - snap the photo, click as few times as possible (hopefully no typing) and move on.

Would be cool if you could have a cloud based system that let you edit things online, so you didn't have to mess with your phone when you have to type a lot of items. Don't know how much you want to get into this though, cloud space isn't cheap :P

I got gingerbread a couple months back and the GPS was worse than 2.2. BUT i realized you have to make sure its on all the time, that way it has time to constantly search for a signal i guess. its funky but for some reason leaving it on all the time does not effect my battery in the least.

Some really great input, thanks everyone!

In direct reply to the posts about having an app that is "quick" to log a fish, this is currently how my app works:

You can save all of your gear into the app and setup "gear setups/combos" for all of your different setups to be re-used when adding a fish.

- When you go in to add a fish(1 click to get to the Add a Fish form), the only thing required is a Fish Species, which in a future update you will be able to set your "Default" species.

- You can also manually mark your GPS spot at a later point by using the Map and pinpointing the exact location

- Also, you can set a gear setup/combo as your default setup so that when you go into add a fish, it will automatically select the gear used and add it to the fish.

- If you let your GPS get a lock on your position when adding a fish, it will automatically download the weather for the current location and save it with that fish

There's lots of other little features with this part of the app, but is something like this fast/easy enough that it would make you want to use it?

Also, Nate, as you had mentioned about a "Cloud" based system, as soon as I get the next version of the app out, I'll be finishing up the website which will allow you to add gear, fish, locations, etc. from your browser and allow you to either import them or have them sync to the app automatically. The details haven't been fully worked out though, but it is something that will happen.

@endless - the app will currently allow you to view the weather forecast for any location in the U.S., but I agree that I will need to add in the ability to check a "fishing forecast".

Now I just gotta find the time to add all the features that I can think of :)

Maybe I'm just an old fart, but why would anyone need to record information and take a photo of say a 15" fish. I'm only interested in the spectacular fish I catch, believe me I remember everything I need to know.about when, where and I how I caught it. Personally speaking when I'm fishing I don't want to be bothered, I just wanna fish,,,,,,,,,,,the time you take took log that info, may have cost you the fish of your life, but you'll never know.

As far as a knot app, if you don't know the right knots before you get out there, you're not ready to fish, Bass Resource will give you any knot you need to know before hand.
