silver yote sniper Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Hello i am new here with several questions. My dad had a boat when i was young and i now am thinking of buying one. I am thinking a flat bottom jon boat will do. I will need it to carry four people. The lakes i will be using are trolling motor only okay which boat and stuff should i look at? would like a gas motor incase i go to lakes that allow them. The boat does not have to have a console and am fine with controling steeriing at motor. need help on what i need to get me started. Thanks in advance for the help. This boat will be used for all purpose fishing. I do really enjoy fishing for cats and will be jugging alot from it.<BR clear=all> Quote
endless Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 To me if just looking for a regular jon boat 4 people is allot but I would try to get something no smaller than 14 and possibly 55lb trust trolling motor. Not sure if with 4 people if I wouldn't go smaller unless running two a one time but with that more power but more weight. Also make sure you pay attention to the weight and don't try to over exceed it. One more thing if trying to craiglist a boat keep an eye out on some fiberglass or aluminum V-haul or a tri haul like my 15' Thundercraft. Allot of times you can find them cheap with out motors or even with them. Quote
silver yote sniper Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 okay thanks for the info. where do i find the weight rating for the boat? Quote
endless Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 okay thanks for the info. where do i find the weight rating for the boat? It not removed it should be a tag on boat listing capacity. Maybe the seller can tell you if still on or give model number and maybe there will be somewhere online where you can find out. On my Tracker 14 the tag is in front of the back seat and it's a 3 person or 375 weight capacity, 15 hp. On my 15' Thundercraft it's rated for 900 pounds and a 90 hp motor. Quote
endless Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Or find something like this jon boat. This is my brother's that he is working on. It's a Lowe's 16' and I believe it's 5' wide. This just might be your best bet on a jon boat if can find one like this. That's the link to his pics and topic. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 Four in a jon boat? It's ok if you're all bait fishing, but casting with four in a jon boat is courting disaster. Even with four experienced fishermen paying strict attention to every cast it's not what I consider to be a wise move. Four person capacity boats have weight ratings all over the place, but some list between 800 - 900 pounds max. Keep in mind, that includes gear, battery(ies, fuel, motor(s), etc. I'd guess on the average boat, that "stuff" is 300 to 400 pounds. That means the four fisherman would have to average about 125 pounds each. 1 Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 4 people + gear = 20 footer. JMO Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 http://www.trackerboats.com/boat/specs.cfm?boat=3358 i think thats a starting point for what you need. that IMO would make a great lil boat. Quote
