Fishwhittler Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Have you ever thought about how many different bluegill patterns there are out there? There are hundreds of them, and while they each represent the same fish species, no two are identical. I thought it might be interesting to see a bunch of different painters versions of the same pattern in one thread, so if you paint a bluegill pattern, post a pic of it here! I'll start the ball rolling with four of my own: Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 I love that 1st one there it matches the gills up here perfictly Quote
senko_77 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Dave, I'm loving that pattern. I think gills give off that greyish look when not in direct sunlight. IMO, even though the other colors pop more, your pattern is the most realistic one. GJDM 1 Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 I think gills give off that greyish look when not in direct sunlight. thanks, i've noticed this too. it seems like baby gills are almost always just an iridescent silver with a greenish cast. that's what i was going for with this one. BIG M Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I hate painting blue gill patterns, mainly because I'm never happy with the finished bait. Here are a few of the blue gills I've painted recently. Quote
Stringjam Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 This one is more of a blend of bluegill and firetiger, but it ended up being one of my favorites: A little cover bait I carved up a few years ago: Quote

Locked Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Big Bass Man: Do you sell lures painted like that? If not, how much would you want for one? Quote
Fishwhittler Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 Thanks for all the replies guys. Senko_77, most of the bluegills I see in the water have much more subdued colors than the bluegills I posted. The bluegill in the fourth pic I posted is my latest attempt, and I tried to tone down the colors and go for a bait that is more silver overall. One reason I paint brightly colored bluegill patterns is because bright colors are more attractive to fishermen than duller, more realistic colors. I really like all of the bluegills that have been posted so far. Keep em' coming! Ben Quote
BIG M Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Ben, here are few more gills. Couple of these are painted over foil. Quote
Lee Strickland Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 MonteSS. I believe skirts count. That looks awesome. Wish I had the patience to make some like that. Quote
Fishwhittler Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 Big M, those are some very nice patterns there, particularly the lighter version. MonteSS, that's a very good looking spinnerbait. Quote
jbass Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 All painting is hard for me but the blue gill pattern, seems to evade my expertise. Quote
LeBron_Hill Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Not one that I painted myself, but one that was painted for me by BB Lures out of Kentucky... Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 10, 2011 Super User Posted August 10, 2011 wow that one is really nice Quote
ToledoEF Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 I will add a few of mine even though they arent as good as the rest of you guys. Your skills make me look like a small child finger painted them! These are what I have come up with, but I have more ideas and hopefully some better brush control. When I get some time I need to get back into the booth! Quote
Fishwhittler Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 ToledoEF, glad to see you posting some of your work. Nothing wrong with those patterns; the whole point of this thread is to get a bunch of different takes on the bluegill pattern. Quote
