Diggy Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 st.croix mojo bass 7ft 6in 12-25lb its the "pitching" model used about 8 times max $45 This is a craigslist posting I saw locally. Is it worth buying in your honest opinion for this price? I figure I could throw a reel on this if its worth it St. Croix MBC76MHMF Mojo Bass Casting Rod $109 retail This is the 7' 6", 1 piece, medium heavy power Mojo Bass Cast MBC76MHMF "Pitchin" Rod with a moderate fast tip. St. Croix has designed this powerful rod for pitching jigs into heavy cover and for light-to-medium flipping. Stock pic Quote
shootermcbob Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 alot of folks here don't like the mojo bass rods. I have two, the crankbait rod (7 ft, med heavy moderate action) which I like very much. I also have the 7ft tube/grub spinning rod. I don't think it is as sensitive as my cabelas xml spinning rods, but I bought it used for 50 bucks. It does, however, make a wonderful rod for throwing 1/4 oz crankbaits, esp on a windy day. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 30, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 30, 2011 For $45 I don't think you could go wrong. If you decide you don't like it you can use it until you have money for something you will like and then you'll have a pretty good backup rod. Just make sure to check the guides out real well to make sure they aren't chipped or damaged or you'll have to put money into it before you can even fish it. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 The mojo does seem to catch a little heat around here but its not a bad rod. The only mojo I've ever fished is my friends 6"6 plastics rod and its pretty nice. At full retail maybe not the way you wanna go but for$45 you can't go wrong. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 If it were twice that much I would buy it. I have a couple Mojo's and have had zero issues with them. They are as sensitive as any rod in there price range, they are not the lighest, but are light enough, and better made than most. They are a little tip heavy with out a reel mounted on them, put an average size reel on one and they balance out fine, a little tweaking to get it to your personal comfort level may be needed, but then again it's a $100 rack rod, not a custom build. I don't understand all the self proclaimed rod experts on here grabbing a rod off the rack, with out mounting a reel on it, or even fishing it, and saying they are tip heavy. I think because they were one of the first of the "value priced " rods to come out with the split grip/fancy paint jobs people expected too much of them. They perform no better or no worse than the more expensive St Croix Premiers they even use the same blanks and guides, yet the Premiers seem to get a pass. In the $100 rage I would take a Mojo over ANY other rod out there........yes I said ANY. Including Abu's junk. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 i was in dick's the other day and compared 4 6-6 mh casting rods all the same model.all four had handles in different places. Quote
Fat-G Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I would never touch a "Mojo" rod. Edit: Just saw the price...wow buy that thing! Great deal. Quote

Sure you did, just more of your hate for things you don't own or fish. Nothing new. I have had my hands on probably a hundred or more different St Croix's in multiple series, in multiple stores, in multiple states, and owned a couple dozen more from every line except the Legend Elite or Legend X-treme. I have never seen this. Are they immune from lemons? No, but you just happened to have 4 in your hands in the same place? Un real. I am surprised you didn't have a Loomis, Shimano, or Power Pro blast tossed in for good measure. 1 Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 should be a good stick. if i were buying the rod id be looking for a hefty reel to strap to the thing to help with balance. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 If the Mojo is all you can afford it makes sense. A pitchin rod is the rod that I have in my hand more than any other model. It's the one stick that get's the higher budget as a result. I want light, sensitive and balanced. The Mojo lacks all of the above but if you have the limited budget and need a P-stick, it's a no brainer. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 There is nothing wrong with the Mojo when new. Because it isn't in a rack and you can't eyeball the rod, I probably wouldn't jump into the purchase. Used rods can have small nicks in the finish especially around guides from normal to rough handling by owners, these nicks can cause the rod to explode on hook set. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote

I've owned a couple Mojos (6'8" MXF and 6'9" MLXF spinning rods) and they're the absolute LAST rod I'd select in the ~$100 range. They're tip-heavy unless you pair them with 11+ oz reels and the sensitivity is below some of the other rods in their price range. I'm glad that you've found a rod line that you like, but the reviews of the Mojo are generally fairly accurate. Quote

With the 100 dollar market becoming so competitive, the Mojo line is quickly dropping further and further down the list. I've used them a few times. Definitely felt tip heavy and not nearly as sensitive as other rods that sell for a similar price. That's just my opinion though. Other people use them and tend to love them. For 45 bucks though, you're not out much if you don't like it. Quote

paangler13 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I would buy it, I have a triumph, same blank as a mojo, but a full handle. When in doubt, you can never have too many rods! Jim Quote
Super User RoLo Posted August 1, 2011 Super User Posted August 1, 2011 A rod purchase is very personal, and a decision that really can't be left to others. It's best to begin with a list of features that you 'must' have, and other features you'd 'prefer' to have. If this rod is the power, action and length that you're looking for, then you know the answer Roger Quote

Locked Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I don't think you can go wrong for 45 bucks. I have 3 st croix mojos(66MHF, 66MF, 70MF), and I like them all. I beat the crap out of these rods and they're still going. I've bent them and jammed them into things where I can't believe the rod didn't break. I even stepped on two of them partially while fishing on some big rocks and gouged the hell out of the paint, but they didn't break. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted August 1, 2011 Super User Posted August 1, 2011 I own 2 Mojo's, both 6.6 MHF jig and worm rods. I think they are just fine. I also have Premiers, Falcons, and BPS $35.00 graphite series rods. They all feel okay to me. I guess I just have numb hands and fingers. When I am catching and releasing a 6# bass, I simply don't care where the rod came from. BUY IT!!! Hootie Quote
tmier Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Wow this thread is hilarious. I hate reading an opinion battle but only did because I just bought a mojo crank rod, I like it, but I'm no pro. Hell I barely get to fish as of lately. But the rod I bought did feel better then the rest of the rods I tried with a reel in Gander that day. Its personal preference being determined by opinion here on BR. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 2, 2011 Super User Posted August 2, 2011 I own one. Got it at Cabelas bargain bin 2 years ago for 10 bucks. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. $100. range Get a Fenwick HMG. Got 3 of those and couldn't be happier. Quote
