Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2011 Super User Posted July 28, 2011 I need help fishing a jig on ledges and holes. I'm pretty good working jigs on points and cover but what about ledges with drop offs or holes where u need the jig to drop vertical instead of swinging under the boat or threw the colum to the other wall of the hole. Do u just depress the thumbbar again to let it fall or stip out by hand. Some of these holes are only 20ft at best but they go from 10ft of water drop to 25 then come back up to 10ft and we marked fish all over these holes. Quote
River Rat316 Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 To get the jig to drop vertical you have to hand feed line out to it, the same with ledges, depending on how picky the fish are you might need to hand feed line out on ledges also. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2011 That's what I was thinking I didn't think pressing the thumbar would be enough Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 28, 2011 Super User Posted July 28, 2011 I used to have a 7' heavy/mod-fast spinning rod loaded with 30# braid that I used for this. Just open the bail, and let her rip. Always keep your fingers on the line, and watch for line jumps on a drop. That;s usually a fish. Other wise, you can also fish "uphill" if possible, though if it's like the spot we were at, that's not really possible. Watch out for pikes, LOL. Quote
The Bassinator Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I always hand feed line out until you see your line stop moving. Once it stops moving then youre on the bottom if it doesnt stop moving you could have a fish or its just a really deep hole. I also sometimes finish my cast by pulling my rod back to the 12 o'clock position or greater with my the spool released and my thumb lightly feathering it so that it gives out some extra line. Hope this helps Quote
Chris W Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Make sure that you use a heavy enough jig too. Don't try to fish 20ft with a 3/8 oz jig. I fish Ky Lake and Barkley alot with jigs on the ledges and about 3/4oz is the smallest I use for 20ft of water. Try ripping them off the bottom to the bass really seem to like it, creates a good reaction bite. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2011 I have a 1 1/2oz jig with a stanly ribbit as a trailer but its a white jig idk how stained the water will be but I'm picking up more jigs tomorrow. JF this is the spot we fished I haven't caught a pike outa there the last 2 trips but that was funny u thought u had a good one on that drop shot set the hook little head shake snap goes the line Quote
