Hey guys,

I know I've been talking to a few of you about starting to build jigs and spinnerbaits well, I finally have funds to do so. I'm willing to spend 300 to 400 for everything I need to get started but was hoping not to spend everything I have.

Not sure what style molds I should get though and once that is done what size hooks, beads, clevis's, blades, etc should I get?

I know I'll need a hot pot, lead, and wire formers which I already have plenty of lead I'm just not sure what else Im gonna need.

I need help on this, and who knows maybe you'll be getting free takle out of giving some free info haha.

Here's a pretty good guide to start with on spinnerbait parts:

http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/content/make_spinnerbaits.htm

I've "palyed around" with other sizes with positive results, but this will give you a good starting point.

Jig and spinnerbait molds will have recommended hook sizes and manufacturer's hook catalog numbers associated with them. Go to Jann's Netcraft or any other online tackle making site and they will have a section on molds. Heck you can even go to Do-It Molds site for the same info.

A lot of guys here modify the molds to accept different hooks from othe manufacturers, but I suggest using the recommedation listed on the mold to start out with before you go hog wild on modifications to your stock mold.

Hope this helps and good luck! Be sure to post some pics of your work. :)

I'm not looking for free tackle, but if you want I have a list of things to get started in pouring jigs and roughly a starting cost. If you would like the list PM me your e-mail and I will get it out to you. I also have some tutorials I can give you as well.

So far I got the hooks, the mold, the weed guards, and the hot pot but what tools do I need?

I'm starting off easy with jigs first.

Mostly you can get by with some pliers and side cutters but a good pair of gate shears comes in real handy.

You will need a way to paint the heads so when you order the gate shears get a few colors of powder paint.

On a personal note if you are only going to make for yourself you can buy pre poured spinnerbait heads and not have the cost of a mold.

I'm gonna just buy the gate shears at home depot or somewhere like that and I was gonna buy powder paint at BPS. How do I need to paint them though? Spray paint or dip and how do I dip with out a fluid bed?

I did not know gate shears were available at a place like Home Depot.

You can dip them in the powderpaint jars. I did it for years.

You can use any heat source to warm up the lead. I use a small propane torch when only doing a few. Some guys use a heat gun. I have used a candle. Be sure to paint them and put the skirts on before attaching the weedguard.

I'm sure Cadman has some instructions that he might email you. Ted seems to have a file for most everything. Also you might contact him for paint. He had some cheap a while back. If you have a Harbor Freight Sales near you they have a few colors of powder.

I thought gate shears are just like dikes?
