xjma99 Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I was wondering if anyone with an aluminum boat (Lund or otherwise) that has the transducer mounted on the transom could share some pics, especially if they're happy with the mounting!! I think I generally know where to mount it (starboard, ~16" from the motor, away from seams and just below the bottom of the hull) but was wanting to see how other people had had success or places that people didn't like before I drill holes in my brothers boat! This would be going on a 16' lund dlx. Also, I'm wondering how thick the aluminum is and if there is like a hollow part or something? I'm assuming that I'll need to plug the holes with silicone before I put it back in the water. How long does the silicone need to cure? Thanx in advance for any help!! Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted July 27, 2011 Super User Posted July 27, 2011 Please don't ask me to go out in that garage to take that picture. From the way it sounds, you've got a good idea where to mount it, other than below the level of the boat. Mine is level with the bottom of the boat so that I don't bump it on anything I may run on top of. Your transom should be thick enough that using a 1/4" to 1/2" sheet metal screw (stainless of course) without going all the way through it. Using tape on the drill bit should allow you to know when to stop drilling. On my last install, I used clear DAP silicone sealant. Put on a wide spread of it the size of the entire bracket, and then screwed it down. Not sure how long you should wait, but I took mine out the next day with no problem. Remember to put in several cable holders on the transom as well. Quote

It depends on what transducer for what sonar technology. Quote
xjma99 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Posted July 28, 2011 It depends on what transducer for what sonar technology. Thanx Lund Explorer. Is there any other reason for the ducer not to go below the bottom other than hanging up on stuff? I was planning on putting it down below maybe 1/2" or so?? Should be level though, eh? Not really afraid of running stuff over and I believe that it will pop up if it did hit. It's a skimmer transducer made to mount on the transom for a cuda 350. Quote

It's a skimmer transducer made to mount on the transom for a cuda 350. That transducer style works very well for transom mounting. The centerline of the transducer should be at the bottom of the hull. Install the mount bracket with the screws midway of the screw slots so you will have up and down adjustment if needed. If there is a weld bead at the junction of the hull bottom and transom, you may have to mount it a little lower to get below the aeriated water caused by that. Quote

I'm getting more and more confident that I will be able to do this right, the first time!! I searched google for pics of transom mount transducers and most of what came up were pictures of how NOT to do it...and multiple holes in the transom!! It's my brothers boat, he's letting me borrow it for a week and take it 3 hours away (that's far for us New Englanders) and I'd like for him to let me borrow it again in the future!!! Quote
xjma99 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Posted July 28, 2011 One more Q on running the wire. I plan on putting the display on the port side, 'ducer on the starboard, and the motor has electric start. How far away from the power wire for the starter (or does it matter) do I need to stay? This is a 20hp honda tiller. Thanx again! Can't wait to mark fish with this thing! Quote

Running the transducer cable near the motor could give you some static interference(that is usually resolved with the proper resister spark plugs), BUT the starter won't be a problem, it isn't in use enough to matter. Diablos Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 if it's a new unit, did it come with a paper/cardboard template to help mount it? Quote
