Glenn Reynolds Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Recently back to fishing after many years of too much d**n work and not enough casting. I have bought a relatively inexpensive set up to begin with. 6'6" Rhino rod with a Quantum 40. I already have learned Stren line is not what it used to be (Memory is HORRIBLE) and Berkley Big Game is non existent from what I have seen. I am running 10# test and fish from shore 90% of the time. I love spinning reels and was surprised snapshots and the like have gone away. This Rhino rod is a two piece, the one I had for many years with a Quantum snapshot was stolen many years ago, unfortunately. I only trust this combo as it landed me the Salmon of a life time and that fish should have broke something cuz it was all medium action. I am looking for a solid set up with rod, reel and line. I mostly fish jigs or spinners and live bait. I am not looking to give up my first born for a set up (although sometimes I do consider it). Just need to know what works. Thanks, Glenn Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 26, 2011 Super User Posted July 26, 2011 Check this place out. They are having a big sale on Shimano and Loomis rods as well as an assortment of reels. I'm sure you can find a nice 7'+ M/H rod for your needs. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in anyway. http://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/fishing-rods/casting-rods/freshwater.html Quote
Packard Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I'd get a Shimano Sahara and a maybe a Berkley Cherrywood. It's just over $100 if that's what you were thinking. I have that setup for my light spinner baits and jigs. Not the best setup in the world but it gets the job done and is reliable. As far as line goes 6-12 lb Trilene XT will do. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 If I was looking to spend little money on a rig I planned to keep a little while, I would keep an eye out at garage sales/flea markets (including the one at this site) for a 6'6" - 7' decent baitcast rod, with a fast/Mh action. There are many brands that people will recommend and most are very good, just get something with decent sensitivity...in the IM7/IM8 range. Then I would go to eBay and buy a used quantum accurist pt. These are great little reels: aluminum frame, flippin switch, 5 bearings, ext drag adjustment, etc. And you can get them for $30 -$40. Spool it up with some 12lb yozuri hybrid ultra soft and you will have a BC rig for under $100 that can do just about any kind of fishing you want to do from shore. Keep an eye on the garage sales, you can really get good deals at times. I recently bought an all star IM10 rod with a shimano chronarch 100SF for $50 at a garage sale (I could sell the reel for 3x that right now on eBay) Quote

It's much easier to cast and manage around trees and bushes. But that's my opinion. Quote

There are plenty of items for sale on forums all over. Keep an eye out and you will find a great deal on rod and reel that will give you LOTS more for your money. For example, you could pick up a Loomis IMX and Stradic FI for just a little over $200...new MSRP would be over $400. Even if you want to spend half that you're still going to end up with much better equipment for the same investment. Also, I would rather give my money to help out an angler and get a good deal in return rather than a large corporation. I've talked myself into many purchases by saying, "I'm really just helping out someone else by buying this.." Also, for new spinning reels on a budget I don't think you can beat Pflueger. They have something in about every price range and all are good quality. Buy a President, find a nice used rod in your price range and you will be set. Quote
Glenn Reynolds Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Thanks for the advice. I think I will do some looking around in the places suggested. Quote
