Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 25, 2011 Super User Posted July 25, 2011 OK, it's time to start planning for the next outing. The consensus was that we hit Mashpee/Wakeby on the Cape. It has both largemouth and smallmouth bass. I must confess, this pond has not been kind to me. I've tried it a few times and worked hard to catch a few mediocre fish, though I did catch a decent rainbow on a dropshot rig. But, it is a nice pond with plenty of structure and in places, vegetation. Not huge, but maybe a tad larger than Whitehall. Nice ramp and parking facility. Here's the deal. Before Labor Day, we'd have to get there earlier on a Saturday or Sunday than we did at Whitehall. It's a popular place, but large enough to accomodate the pleasure boaters, skiers and fishermen. Who's interested? Time for your input. Quote
Jones508 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I'm all for trying that lake but my only concern is how busy it will be on the cape this time of year, mostly non fishers too...but the location does work for everybody. Either way I'm there no matter how early. Quote
ukbumpkin Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I am definitely in once again and August is a fairly easy month for me to fit it in to. I also have no problem with an earlier start. Quote
grampa1114 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Well I hate to bring common sense into this but the way it looks to me is that after Labor Day the pressure may be off the watersports and the smallmouth may be starting their fall feeding. Maybe someone can check the tournament schedule first. I should be able to make it most any time though. More people...more boaters please. Anyone...anyone... Hey photographer...can you make it this time? Quote
MLlanes Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 i go back to school to start RA training on august 17th so i wont be able to make this one. =/ Quote

GrundleLove Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 You better go...it's my turn to fish with you. Sign me up. Teach me the ways of the force..... or just how to be a better fisherman...either way.. Quote
ukbumpkin Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 The Heron is fishing with me ... he has technique like no other.....doesn't even use a dang lure. Says a lot about Grundle's personality also...haha! Quote
ukbumpkin Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I have a pretty open week next week (August 01-thru-06) anyone else available for getting a lure or two wet? I can do anytime and any place. Quote
GrundleLove Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Actually I MAY be able to do something the 6th. Let me know, if anything maybe if gramps is down, let me take another swing at Whitetail. But I am down for anything. Also, I can NOT do anything the weekend AFTER labor day. The Saturday, it is out company's golf outing. Quote
Diablos Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I would like to join a 'get together' at Mashpee-Wakeby if it happens. I am just a little leery of that place between Memorial and Labor. If it does happen I would be happy to supply some grub. Quote
grampa1114 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 You would be a welcome addition... Please keep an eye on the post... Grampa Quote
grampa1114 Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Can we start the date selection process...then we can see who can make it... How about Saturday Sept. 17...anyone...anyone...anyone... Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 3, 2011 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2011 That's good for me. Quote
GrundleLove Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Seems a ways away, wouldn't mind doing something before then Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 3, 2011 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2011 I cannot figure out Mashpee/Wakeby. It has not been kind to me. The other day I caught my first decent fish from that pond in at least a half dozen ventures at fishing it. I did lose another nice bass, and what I assume was a good pickerel. Never saw it, but it pulled really hard, then the typical "tick" of the line parting when severed by the toothy critters. I did learn a few things, thanks to Gramps, and anticipate better days on M/W. Would be nice to have a boater or two join us. I can/will bring my canoe with trolling motor, batteries, and fish finder if needed. It has comfortable, padded swivel seats with backs. Plenty roomy for two with gear and coolers. You'll need to plan on bringing your own pfds. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 3, 2011 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2011 Wanna do something earlier in August? Fine by me. Pick a time and place. I'd opt for Great Herring, but parking would be impossible on any weekend before Labor Day. May be going to Wallum tomorrow, and Tate really likes it, so that's an option. Plus, it has smallies which some have yet to catch. Wallum looks good on the map. Lots of structure with a maximum depth of 78 feet. Quote
Jones508 Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 What about the Nip in Bridgewater? I've heard through the grapevine the fishing's been getting better there. Good ramp and parking, right off 495, and doesn't usually get crazy jammed with boaters. This has nothing to do with the fact its a mile from my house bwahahah Quote
GrundleLove Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 anyone doing anything this Sat that i can tag along with? Let me know p.s. Jones your anaconda landed me a fish last weekend. thanks Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 3, 2011 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2011 Nippennicket? Not for me thank you. I tried it a couple of years ago from my canoe. Didn't even get a nibble. Plus, most of the pond is three feet deep or less, hardly suited for bass boats. I wouldn't run mine in there. I went all over the pond, from north to south and east to west. It may have just been a poor day, but it turned me off. Lake Sabbatia would be a better alternative, though someone said the place is a mess. Not sure how they meant it. I know it has a lot of coontail and other vegetation, but I've caught fish the three times I tried it, and that was in my paddling canoe. Quote
