mr.mallard Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 i want a setup to throw the 4 in. 1 oz bbz spro shad. im thinking the BPS crankin stick in 7 foot MH and the BPS pro qualifier with 15 lb. Abrazix? im going to be fishing this in some clear water and some heavily stained water. good setup. want to stay in the 100 dollar price range on each of the rod and reel and want to also be able to crank with it, Quote
Super User deep Posted July 25, 2011 Super User Posted July 25, 2011 The longer the rod the better, those little 4" Spros don't cast particularly well. I throw them on my 7'8" Pinnacle Perfecta cranking stick. EDIT: didn't notice the price range, sorry. Take a look at the older model Shimano Compres. Hell of a rod for <$100. I have one of those too.. Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I throw my BBZ 4" on a BPS Extreme 7' MH with a BPS Extreme Special Edition. It does it job. The spro's do not throw well at all most of the time. They like to helicopter a lot. Quote
Packard Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Seaguar is great line. It's a little pricey but I'm happy with my InvisX. I'd go for 10 or 12 lb test. IF you are getting the PQ Reel then be sure to get either the 5.2:1 or 4.7:1 gear ratio. I'd get the Shimano Crucial while they are on sale right now or the St. Croix Premier. Quote

Definitely not light line with the BBZ. They helo so bad on light lines you'll pop it relatively quickly. I throw mine on a Cumara 7-11 MH XF. While it isn't optimum, the rod also works very well for other tactics such as Traps and hollow bellies. On the rod is a Chronarch D7 with 15lb Tatsu or 20lb Tatsu. Heavier line does help with casting characteristics, but they're still pretty flaky on pulling the whirly bird. If you want a rod to pull double duty, the 7-6 Crankin Stick in MH Xfast wouldn't be a bad rod at all for it. It will crank, rip traps, as well as fish other swimbaits. Quote
Packard Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Sorry I've never used a swimbait like that so I didn't know. Quote

mr.mallard Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 i was thinking 40 lb. suffix 832 with 15 lb abrazix leader. how long of leader? Quote
Packard Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 So you are giving advice on something you have no knowledge of? I assumed it was a crankbait since he wanted a crankbait rod, my mistake. Quote
Super User webertime Posted July 26, 2011 Super User Posted July 26, 2011 I throw the BBZ 4" and 6" a lot. I use a 7'6" H Carrot Stick with 50lb braid (PP or Tuf Line) and no leader. I've thrown the 4" on a 7' Avid and 6'10" Compre as well with 40lb braid and it works, just not a ton of distance on the cast. Hint, get a fast sinker 4" and fish it like a rattle trap in/above weeds. Quote
breezy Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I picked up a floater BBZ shad a while back, used it for two trips and it hasn't been back out of the tackle box. I was throwing it on a 734c, braid+17lb mono leader. The lure was just a little too much for the rod but not to the point I felt like it could snap at any moment. Haven't used the BPS 7'6 MH crankin' stick but as long as it has enough backbone to throw the bait I think it should work and still pull double duty with other cranks. The two times I used the BBZ shad, I thought there was something really off with my casting because I was getting horrible distance. After reading this thread though seems like lots of other people have had issues with it...makes me feel a lot better Quote
