gall Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 ive been fishing my friends pond a lot latley mainly due to the fact its an old farm pond with some lunkers in it and no one ever fishes it since its private property. recently since theres been a lot of heat and no rain theres been a lot of topwater alage and it gunks up just about every lure i have ive been using frogs and worms to weightless it right under the alage the only other problem there is a lot of sumberged veg too i think hydrilla does anyone have any other lures that might prove effective for this type of top and underwater vegatation. Even when running it weedless i still get a lot of hang ups in the underwater vegatation so any ideas on what to use would be great Quote
Packard Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 You have to punch the mat. You can use a jig like these. Quote
s13john Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Superfluke and horney toads are killer in private ponds like that Quote
The Bassinator Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 go with the fluke and try to stay away form the algae with a jig or worm. You could hook into the algae and drag it where you want and make a lane to fish in. Other than that you options are kind of limited thats just how it is. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Next time you go there bring a garden rake with you. Go to the parts where you think there are fish and make several 2-3 ft wide hole in the mats. Come back the next day and from as far as possible pitch a t-rigged plastic of choice into the hole or walk your frog over the hole. You will almost always get a violent hit. This is a trick that i learned from a ol' timer and it is crazy how well it works. He keeps a metal garden rake in his boat for that exact reason. Quote
gall Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 thanks for all the ideas i been using a texas rig a lot the only problem is they have a fountain in the middle of the pond and its always shifting around the topwater muck Quote
The Bassinator Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Maybe you could round up all the algae with the rake that midnighthrasher mentioned it might come back but at least you wont have to deal with it for awhile Quote
hatrix Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Does it look like this? There is tons of huge fish in this pond but I can't get through the scum on top. I dont know how to rotate it sorry. Quote
Super User webertime Posted July 29, 2011 Super User Posted July 29, 2011 Ok so how many of us just turned our laptops on their side? To be helpful, I fish a similar pond, T-Rigged Beaver Type baits, Fat Ikas, and Flukes work for me when it gets scummy and hot. Quote
hatrix Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I have tried jigs and all kinds of stuff. Nothing makes it through the pond scum, it just lands on top. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 In really dense cover that I'm determined to penetrate, I'll use a 1oz Dirty Jigs No-Jack Punchin Jig I use jig trailers that generate the most pulse and throb, in other words, I use no product sold as a "jig trailer" Roger Quote
hatrix Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I for sure dont have a 1 oz jig. Maybe I might have to grab one tomorrow and give it a shot. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted July 30, 2011 Super User Posted July 30, 2011 Don't get stuck just on jigs, either. A punch rig is a SUPER effective tool. We regularly punch mats 1.5'-2' thick with 1.5oz tungsten. It's amazing the strikes you get sometimes. Quote
gall Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 yes that is exactly what it looks like and underneath its sumbergent vegation Does it look like this? There is tons of huge fish in this pond but I can't get through the scum on top. I dont know how to rotate it sorry. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 31, 2011 Super User Posted July 31, 2011 When I speak of heavy cover, I'm thinking more in terms of dense beds of pondweed, hydrilla or milfoil. What you have here is a scum pond, and their worst feature are the strings of slime and scum that cling to the lure. To each his own, but I would attack that situation with a topwater lure (solid toad, hollow frog, rat, etc), which will etch a visible path through the slime. Bass living under a cover of slime are usually very receptive to topwater lures because they're living in a dark world where beggars can't be choosers. Roger Quote
hatrix Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 @Roger I have used like every top water lure imaginable in that pond. It is sooooo hard to get the fish to bite and when I do get a bite its like they don't commit so if you set the hook nothing will be there. I have tried to fish that place multiple times and only once I caught fish and it was 5 of them with 2 of them being 3.5# or so. All the fish came on koppers lures 4 on the hard body walking frog and 1 on the hollow body frog. I have tried throwing frogs on to the scum but for some reason I doubt any thing will hit it out there. You cant walk it so it just gets stuck in a rut and tracks straight back to shore. No matter what time it is there stuff is always hitting the surface little dinks jumping out of the water and the occasional splash of a bigger fish taking something. There is like 1 million frogs there literally its crazy and the amount of dragonflys and bugs is crazy to. The 2 fish I did manage to pull out there that were about 3.5 where not as big as a normal fish that weight would be but the stomach on these things was HUGE they had giant belly's like a DD bass does cause I think they are just gorging them selves on the frogs and what not. I know there is some seriously fat lunkers in there I just don't know how to get them and it is so frustrating. I think with this pond and a little luck I could break my PB and get a DD fish out of there. Quote
jiggszter Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Just looking at the photo, I would toss a buzz bait right to the edge of the scum, let it sink a bit, then yank it back to the top, skate the surface all the way back in. Or just go in and stab 'em. Quote
gall Posted August 2, 2011 Author Posted August 2, 2011 thanks for the info like the worst thing of us is its like a jungle of underwater vegation right underneath it too lol its a tough spot but holds some trophies Quote
