I've been using 2/0 Gamakatsu Superline EWG Hooks when I worm fish. When I use a 10 inch worm, I always have a problem with beleiving that a bass can get that small hook in a ten inch worm. What hooks do you all use, Straight shank, or wide gap? Sizes? thanks for any help!

I also only use Gamakatsu hooks for my worm fishing, i prefer straight shank because it has a lower profile when texas rigged, therefore there is less for a fish to feel so the fish doesnt feel the hook and spit it out. Just my opinion.

Mustad Ultra Point 6/0 Wide Gap Hooks. These hooks are the best!

Straight shank round bend hook will produce a higher hookup ratio ;)

Hook size is always determined by lure thickness not length!

I use Gamagkatsu offset EWG hooks. Catt, Roadwarrior, and many others recommend the straight shank hooks, and I respect their opinion, but I have a very good hook-up percentage with the wide gap, and a hundred or more from 1/0 to 5/0 in stock. As Catt mentioned using the right hook for the thickness of the bait is key. On most bigger worms I use 5/0.

For 10" worms, I use a Mustad Denny Brauer Filipping Hook in 4/0 or 5/0 and haven't had any problems.

Rather than use a loose hook, I Texas-rig a 10" worm on a jighead.

I like a Owner Wide Gap Plus Black Chrome Hook in 6/0 on big worms. Owner hooks are second to none, the hook points wont roll and the shanks wont flex like some other brands. With big worms there is a lot of plastic that can get wadded up in the fishes mouth and can end up being in the way of the hook penetrating on the hookset. The stiffness of the hook along with the wider gap helps if the worm bunches up, as it does quite often on a bait with lot of plastic.

Roger,

What's your jighead of choice ?

A-Jay, with a 10" Berkley Power Worm, I use an Owner 1/4oz Type-Z Bullet Head.

The hook is an Owner 3/0 needlepoint, and solid hook-ups are the norm with braided line.

Hook size depends a great deal on line material, because monofilament lines provide little or no plastic compression.
