I like it can't say how effective it is but it did land me a 3.5lber. This was a 3 years back. Lately I haven't used much topwater.

I use the coach dog with the orange belly.

It landed the 3.5 for me. I love their loud bloop it gives from wide mouth the hula poppers have. Rebel poppers are good too if never use of them. I had luck with the black/silver.

Here are the reviews for the hula popper on BPS if it helps any.

It must be pretty darn good to last all these years and still being produced. I've read that it was introduced in 1941, I'm not sure if it was or wasn't, but to still be produced some 70 years later, that's a pretty darn effective lure. :)

Ive caught quite a few bass on the Coach dog color this year. One was a 4.5 lb large mouth.

I haven't caught anything with this lure, but I wrote a blog on how to make it look more like the Spro Bronzeye popper... and I know that the Spro catches bass! I have the black color and I'd imagine it would be very effective at night.

Hula modification

I also really like the blurp sound the Hula makes. I've thrown the Hula into some heavy floating grass and was amazed the trebles weren't loaded with salad when I got it back to the boat.

My only beef with the Hula Popper is them rubber strands, they become dry and brittle and haven´t found spares in years, so, I fish them without the tail.

Try gluing on a tail using a Zoom trick worm. ;)

i have used about ever popper made and even made my own and while I have had success with the Hula, by far if you can find a chugger Jr. you will have more success. By far the lure that has landed the most lunkers for me. I had one and my cousin didn't I could out catch him two to one with my Jr. He used to rant and rage because of it. I have to say though I only fished small lakes and ponds. Just a great but sickening site to see a 12 pound large mouth nail it then do a classic jump and shake then watch the Jr. come sailing out of his mouth. I could not even count on two hands the 5lb. and above bass Jr. has got me.

The Northland Crazy Legs Skirts work, as do the Strike King Perfect Skirts. They don't work as well as the flat rubber, mind you, but they work well enough.
