Super User clayton86 Posted July 25, 2011 Super User Posted July 25, 2011 Women are the biggest drain of money known to man closly followed by high performance cars and then fishing its a close race with that being the top 3. My buddys 26 got his masters still living at home with his parents because he's dumped so much into his 69 firebird I think he's up to 32k last I talked to him. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 25, 2011 Super User Posted July 25, 2011 "Pay Yourself First." Easy to say...hard to follow. Set up a savings account and pay yourself first from each paycheck or other income. 10% - 25% - 50% or whatever. Just get into the habit of paying yourself first. (Until you get married. Then the rules change!!!!) 1 Quote
Blue Streak Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Make a habit of doing the things you don't like to do, get them out of your way and when they are done you can really enjoy the things you like without worrying about what has to be done. This applies to saving and studying. 1 Quote
Sfritr Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 The fact that you are thinking about saving now will fair you well young man. If I had been smart enough to listen to everyone when I was 20 years old and was being told to put money into a mutual fund, IRA, 401k etc, I would be sitting on a few hundred K by now. Unfortunately, now I am in my later thirties and wondering what the hell I am going to do for retirement. You can't rely on the Government to help you out. The only person who you can rely on is YOU. Put the money away...... Quote
Fishing Cowgirl Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Save the money, ask for your fishing combos for birthday/christmas gift wishes. Make do with a little. That fish doesn't know what kind of setup has it hooked and the $100 combo can catch them just as good as the $$$combo. You can check out yard sales and estate sales for some extra tackle. You can sometimes score really well at these. That car will need things.. never fails. It can range from tires, to belts, to much more $$. Carpool ALOT! If the buddies carpool with you, don't be shy about getting gas money. Carpool with others as much as you can too. Limit your eating out to once a week..you'll be surpirsed how much you spend doing it and how much you save by not eating out so much. Start an IRA! Open one with the minimum $$ you can, and sock $50 or $100 a month into it. What ever you can will add up to a GREAT Retirement plan. Quote
BassThumb Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Another option would be to get a second job, just for your toys. That's what I've done for years, until recently. The full-time gig goes towards living expenses, and the part-time job is for the fun stuff. Quote
trevor Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Just think of all the sweet rods and reels that will be on the market 4-6 years from now when you finish college. Save now my man, sure wish I would have done so when I was your age. Good luck! Cliff Quote
piscicidal Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Nice work Fat G. It's said that that definition of maturity is the ability to consciously delay pleasure. That being, you are mature beyond your years. Get the education and that fat job. Then go treat yourself to a *#*$load of expensive gear. HINT: get the gear before the girl. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 27, 2011 Super User Posted July 27, 2011 Wow!!! 32 mature people on the Forum! Who would believe it????? Give your money to Aaron to hold for you and then you will not have to worry about it. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Live like nobody today so you can live like nobody tomorrow! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I agree with the rest. Save and save as much as you can. The car wont last forever, other bills will start kicking in, and there will be extra expenses. I would save as much as possible and then some. More you save now with no bills the less you will pay later. What I mean on this is in terms of interest on payments. Less interest more money in your pocket. What you do now will effect the rest of your life. Save and save every penny you can. Quote
brushhoggin Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 aahh screw it. the universe could implode next week for all we know, go out and enjoy yourself Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 28, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 28, 2011 I'd give anything to go back and save all that money I wasted on fishing tackle that never even got used. So many dumb decisions because "I'll start saving next week." Then I bought a truck, made payments, moved out, made payments, truck broke down, bought a new one, made payments. All the sudden my extra money I was going to save disappeared . Start putting money away now while you have nothing to pay for. It is hard to do when all you want to do is have fun and have stuff but you will be so happy you did later! Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Man you need to save you're money. I try to save as much as I can even though I have to pay gas (which is 100 a week), insurance, any extra groceries, books for school, etc and I am still in high school!! I've been able to save a little bit here and there for bait making with my minimum wage summer job because I havn't bought anything i didn't need but once I spend the extra $$$ I have, I'm not buying anything for a long time. Luckily, when school starts back, my parents will again be flippin the bill for food, gas, clothing and all the necessities haha but until then I'm on my own. Like I said before though, save your money for when really needed it because once you spend it, that money is gone. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Start now learning to live well within your means. Start saving NOW and keep it up through out your working life. Debt sucks the life out of you, your relationships and life in general. If you work 20hrs/week and save $5/hour, in two years you'll have saved $10,400. Quote

Sounds like my girlfriend is looking for a mature man On a serious note, though...save your money for school. I am 20 and only got a year and a half at the school of my dreams because I spent money like a wild man and went to a school that I couldn't afford. I'm now working my nuts off trying to get enough money to get back in school in state, where tuition is a lot cheaper. Save your cash, finish school, and live the high life later. College is awesome...living at home working 70 hour weeks at 8.50 an hour really really really sucks 1 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 you're doing the right thing Fat-G, as mentioned earlier the rods and reels in the future are going to be nuts! Be responsible now, save money, but have some fun money to enjoy life. Go to college try not to accmulate debt, and you will be so far ahead of the curve! (Besides, wouldn't you like to go out with Hookingem and catch more fish on a lesser rod and reel then what he has?) Quote
