MuffinMan Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Am i wasting my time using a top water plug like the Heddon Zara Spook in the middle of the day when the water temp. is around 80 degrees? Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Funny you should ask, just a few days ago I had an awesome afternoon fishing a spook in the middle of the day. Bright sun and not a cloud in the sky, and fish after fish were coming up and nailing it. Quote
Packard Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I wouldn't say that you are wasting your time but I don't think it is as productive as a crankbait, senko, or a jerkbait. JMO Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 23, 2011 Super User Posted July 23, 2011 I've had some outstanding results with a similar bait, the Sammy, when fished over deep, off-shore structures for smallies. And yep....right smack in the middle of the day too! You just never know with fish. Best not to count anything out at any time. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 23, 2011 Super User Posted July 23, 2011 I've had some great days throwing a spook jr at high noon on a blue bird day. I also got skunked...LOL. Let the fish tell you what they want and don't pay attention to the "book" on topwaters. As far as I'm concerned, there are no topwater police to tell you when and where to use them... Quote

Is your water really that cold? It's warmer up here. Regardless, I've had an awful lot of topwater action under sunny conditions. But New York's a long way from Florida. Quote

Brand0n Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 everyday is different. its pushing 100+ heat index here so i know the water is warm and everyone around me is using topwaters while im catching fish on senkos. theres days where the topwaters deliver more than anything. just try everything out to see what works. ChiCityBasser Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I would say No you aren't wasting your time if you are catching on it and as someone said let the fish tell you whats working. Quote
1234567 Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Last month I was fishing a topwater around 11:00am. I'd been fishing the same lure for the last three hours without a sign of life from the fish. Luckily my stubbornness payed off that day as I pulled one in pushing double digit. The next three hours went the same as the first three. Why that one fish hit and nothing else all day still has me wondering? I was using a buzzjet, not a spook. Quote
river-rat Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Absolutely not. I've caught fish on Zara Spook's and a Devils Horse in the middlle of the day during summer many times. I concentrate on fishing isolated cover that produces a lot shade. Make multiple casts and don't give up. Some of my biggest summertime bass have come on a topwater between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Super User RoLo Posted July 29, 2011 Super User Posted July 29, 2011 Regardless of the water temperature, time-of-year or time-of-day, the very best time to topwater fish is when a bass is heard breaking the surface.. Whenever you hear the unmistakable whack of a feeding bass, you know the whereabouts of the most suicidal bass in the lake. Roger. Quote
The Bassinator Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I wouldnt say you were wasting your time you were experimenting. If you didnt catch anything then hopefully you learned when not to fish a topwater at least and can eliminate it from the lineup when the same conditions arise. Quote
