I tie both bucktails and craft hair in various sizes from 1/80th to 1.25. As bass jigs go, I tie mostly 1/8 and 1/4 with a few 3/8 every year.

We have a site sponsor that makes some killer hair jigs. Check out his website, there are some great pictures on there. Northstar Hair Jigs

Try bucktail, marabou, and synthetic materials such as Fish Hair. Hook/head sizes vary on what you want. but the bigger the easier to tie, 'till you get to the bigger sizes, after which proportions become an issue. You'd probably have beter luck posting this in the tacklemaking forum......

I tie hair jigs for bass in 1/4 oz to 1 oz. with several different heads. I use 3/0 to 5/0 wide gap hooks. The only hair I have found long enough is bucktails........Al

i like to tie the real some jigs that look like a real craw about 2 1/2 in. it look more real. and im from KY so we dont have big big bass to eat the big craws. and when they hit it they hold onto it and will not let it go

i dont like how the hair is cut straight with the hook. but i like the rubber but i think they put just a little too much on

Phillip the hair is not "cut" at the hook, the last thing you want to do is cut bucktail at the ends, it is hollow and cutting it ruins what little action it has. I tried a bunch of different ties with silicone and hair and this one produced about ten times better than any other one. I know it breaks all the "rules" of hair jigs, to much hair, to short, but trust me it works and it works good!

Hair jigs really come into their own when the water temps dip into the low 40's. I fish from 4-15 feet deep in very clear winter waters with them so I go quite small with a sparse amount of dark maribou or natural bucktail. The head is a custom pour with a flexible double wire weedguard which does a superior job of coming through rock and wood with ease. It doesnt lay on it's side like ball jigs, so I get better hook ups in the roof of the mouth. The heads weigh 1/8 to 3/16 oz. and I fish these on 6 and 8 lb. flouro with a baitcaster. I also use a small double tail chunk to add a little more appeal and weight to this jig. I prefer a 2/0 high quality black nickel hook and I target smallies with these very successfully. I don't make them for sale though.

River Rat,

Do you use a trailer with the hair jigs?

Yes in the warmer water I use a small action trailer like My 2.5" spaz trailer, and in the cold months I use the chunck trailers that are on my website!
