rowyourboat Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 guys, i've tried the night fishing thing 5 different times, and i only have caught 2 fish total. ive tried big black colorado spinners, big black worms, jitterbugs, frogs..... i just dont know what im doing wrong. i fish the same places i do in the day and i catch fish during the day. so do you have 1 or 2 lures that i could probably catch 2 or 3 on if i threw em all night? im just really, really struggling with this and if things dont change, i will be a daylight only guy haha Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 19, 2011 Super User Posted July 19, 2011 You are using proven night baits, and it sounds like you're fishing in spots that hold fish. If you have the "what and where" the other variables are "how" and "when". Most people have a tendency to fish too fast at night in my opinion. A big dark worm or jig worked slowly has caught me many fish at night, including my two biggest. Just like during the day, there will usually be periods when things are slow, but if you are there when it turns on you will be hooked. Keep the faith. Quote
OHIO Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I don't night fish very often, but when I do I usually use a black buzzbait. Best night fishing bait IMO. Quote
djmax22 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 10" power worm or rage tails. Works just about every time. Quote
Josh Bassman Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Last Friday night I fished from 8pm to 2am. I caught 20 fish with the biggest being 4lbs. All fish were caught using a peanutbutter and jelly colored jig. I like to fish with a black spinnerbait at night but the jig was bring in the fish. Quote
bandsr4me20 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Slow down like everyone else has been saying. I started catching a lot more fish on a spinnerbait when I let it sink down to the bottom and then start slow rolling it along with adding some pops in it. Quote
kms399 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 what was the moon phase when you were fishing. for me I will only night fish if there is a 3/4 moon or better and if it is clear skies. I have had too many of those long fishless nights to even bother with anything else. my most productive is a black and gold cavitron buzz bait. Quote
urp Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Caught many a night fish on dark baits but its not necessary. One of my best night producers is a chrome U-20 Flatfish. I've had it 30 years or more and the chrome has worn off. Just painted it with platinum nail polish and it still brings 'em in. Quote
IntroC Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 How stained is the water your fishing? Is it a recreational lake? A perfect night time lake would have water on the clearer side and heavy recreation during the day. Usaully stained water lakes are better to fish during the day. Sometimes reading threads on night fishing you get the wrong impression that all lakes have excellent night bites. That really isn't the case. If your hammering them during the day I would stick with fishing during the day. If there is a lake you know holds good fish but are having a tough go during the day chances are there may be a good night bite. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 20, 2011 Super User Posted July 20, 2011 To consistently catch bass is a process of elimination & duplication. Eliminate patterns & waters that are non-productive & duplicate patterns & waters that are productive. It aint no different @ night You can throw a buzz bait from dusk till dawn & if the bass are not on a top water bite ya aint gonna get bit period. That’s why it’s called fishing & not catching! Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I'm going to go out of the norm I guess. I like the stained, dark, and dirty lakes. It just means an even bigger bait, rattles, etc... My biggest producer on stained and clear lakes at night, blue/black jig with silver scales in skirt, two uncle josh pork chunks, and rattles. Next would be a 13" worm, with a rattle. I do better a little later in the season when the days are hot, but the nights start cooling down with a black buzz bait and sometimes an all white buzzbait right against the bank. My better nights are actually ones with less moon. I keep all lights off the water except the black lights (i've even heard they can spook some following smallmouth though), I make my movements in the boat very quite. If possible, I keep my livewells off while fishing that particular hole. Most of this is just a mind set to make me feel more comfortable. I've had nights I've done just as good with the outboard running while fishing that spot(battery was dying and it was the only way to keep a charge). Quote
