Rod For Flipping And Pitching

I am looking to get a new rod for flipping an pitching. Looking at a 6'10''heavy,extra fast.

I am about 5'9'' and am afraid anything over 7' might be more trouble than anything.

Anybody about my size use longer ones? Also, what do you think about the extra fast?

A long rod will not feel weird, I would suggest a Dobyns 765.

I'd suggest a longer rod than 6' 10". For flipping/pitching, the advantages of a longer rod will far outweigh the little bit of time it might take for you to become accustomed to it's length. Even a few inches would make a big difference in power and distance. I think a 7' 6" rod would be best suited, but if you're worried about going with one that long, then look into the Dobyns Champion 735C. I'm very happy with them as pitching sticks, and they are a great rod for frogging as well.

Longer rod is exactly what you want for pitchin and flipin.

At least 7'4" or longer.

FYI, put a lot of effort into mastering the pitchin and flipin techniques, it will catch you big fish.

In the past 3 months I have really focused on pitchin and now its all I do for the first hour when I go fish and I almost always catch at least 2 or 3 really nice fish when Im pitchin a craw. I dont always catch a lot of fish but the fish I catch pitchin are better quality.

Plus its a blast when you gently lay that craw into cover and a big one grabs it and takes off.

I am the same height as you and I use a 7'11" rod with no problems, it does take a bit of getting used to, but after a while it isn't a problem. I use the Lamiglas Excel 7116C.

The only problem I find with longer rods is sometimes the rear grip is too long and snags on clothing. Beyond that a longer rod is what you want for these applications.

I use a Loomis FSR905X "Flippin Stick" 7' 6" heavy mod/fast. You will like a long stick for pitching. My only complaint is fitting it in the car. LOL

I'm 5'4'' and my flip/pitch rod is an AVC70HF. 7' h/f but in perspective, that rod is 1'8'' longer than me! If most of you are 6' and the rods you use are 7'6''- 7'10'' were in the same boat! I understand the dynamics of the longer rod, but if they are much longer than 7' I feel like im fishing with a fly rod!

I have to agree with you there. I'm the same height as you. A 7'6" or greater rod would be more difficult for me to manage. I use a Dobyns Savvy 735 for my flippin', pitchin' and froggin'..it's not that much more difficult than a standard 7' rod and gives the extra length you need to get the bait out there and the extra leverage for winching them out of the slop.
