TouchTooMuch Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Since I starting to fish everyday (my new motto is "I only fish on days that end in y") I decided I needed to get fishing glasses. I read some and read that polarized glasses work really well, so I went and bought a pair that berkley teamed up with strike king to make, they fit perfectly, polarized, and you can look at the sun without blinking. So, do you guys just wear regular sun glasses and my purchase was a waste, or do you guys wear glasses made for fishing? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 16, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 16, 2011 I have a couple pairs of Coasta Del Mar sunglasses that I only wear fishing. They make a huge difference on what I can see on the water and my eyes aren't nearly as tired after a day of fishing. I do have a pair of cheap Berkley sunglasses that I wear everywhere else that are alright for fishing but they scratch up and break easy. I wouldn't say you wasted your money, anything is better than nothing, but a good pair of sunglasses are a worthy investment! Quote
jdw174 Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 I fished for years with "cheap" glasses. They scratched at the drop of a hat and the optical quality was never there. I recently took delivery of a pair of Costas (Man 'O War model) in the "Green Mirror" tint. This was suggested to me by the factory as being good for use on both sunny and overcast days. Bought them in a progressive lens with readers built in and I can't say enough good about them. The colors are fantastic and the readers perfect. They were just a bit above "pricey", but they are fantastic glasses. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 16, 2011 Super User Posted July 16, 2011 Invest in a good pair of polarized glasses not a pair of off the rack crap . It'll be the best investment you will make in buying fishing gear related products. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 16, 2011 Super User Posted July 16, 2011 I have to wear glasses all the time anyway. I got some polarized prescription sunglasses that I wear whenever I'm outdoors. I like them and I don't get headaches. Quote
quanjig Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Habervision with amber lenses. Yummy good an not super expensive and quality glass lenses. Quote

collegefishing12 Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Had cocoons due to bad eyesight (those that go over perscripton lenses), but recently invested in Oakley prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses. Best investment in a long, long time. Quote

Best investment in a long, long time. How did you like the Cocoons? I wouldn't expect them to compare to prescription "high end" sunglasses, but what did you think about them? I've been thinking about purchasing a pair of the cocoons, but wondering if they were worth it. Quote
Red Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 I wear prescription glasses. I am also know to lose/break sunglasses pretty regular, therefore I use the $20 polarized "fits over" from Walmart. Couldn't handle it if I dumped a pair of $100 shades in the lake! Cliff Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 16, 2011 Super User Posted July 16, 2011 $10 berkley cheapos from wallyworld, can't beat the price. Quote
collegefishing12 Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 The cocoons were definitely worth the investment, as they have lasted for over 4 years. If you like to change lenses, that is another benefit of the cocoons because multiple lenses options can be purchased. However, I stuck with the traditional lenses and had no complaints. The only downfall would be that they do not fit "airtight" to your face, which allows for light to come in at the top corners of the lenses if the sun is shining over yours shoulders just right (not enough to be too upset about). I would not have purchased the prescription lenses for myself, but they were a birthday gift so I cannot complain. For those of you who have glasses and do not want to fork over the money for high-end prescription lenses, I give all my support to the cocoon company. As for bumping an expensive pair in the lake, I would suggest picking up some fish cablez (sp?) or something of that nature. It will prevent you from losing your favorite $20 pair of glasses or $300 prescriptions! Quote
collegefishing12 Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Nothing will prevent flying jigs from close quarters that are known to take out lenses upon contact. That is my only true fear. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 17, 2011 Super User Posted July 17, 2011 Nothing will prevent flying jigs from close quarters that are known to take out lenses upon contact. That is my only true fear. WileyX and Oakley lenses wont even scratch from that. I know first hand. I had a 1/2 oz football whack me in the eye when I was wearing my first pair of oakley's. That's the quality of great sunglasses. However if you're looking for the best quality fishing glasses, it's definitely Costa Del Mar. I got the permit frames with the 580 glass green mirror lenses and man, its like the perfect view of the world! they fit my head frame so nicely, and ZERO light comes in around the edges. Its like turning nasty water into crystal clear water. I too used to use berkely cheap-o's. I though they were good because I could see about 2 foot into the water. With the costa's I can see almost everything! However, if you dont want top shell out almost $200 for Costa 580's my next choice would be Wiley X. I like their frames better than the Oakleys but less than the Costa's. Thats and some come with a foam liner to block out all light from the edges. I think their lenses are a bit better and definitely more impact resistant than Oakleys. The Oakley's can still blow any cheap-os out of the water. But I highly recommend Costa 580 glass green mirror for fresh water in your frame of choosing. Blue if you fish a lot of saltwater. Quote

collegefishing12 Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Glad to hear that the Oakley lenses won't likely break from a flyIng jig... Hopefully I never have to find out. Quote

tentimesover Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I wear prescription glasses all the time and decided to go with the cacoons some time back. I still don't feel like I'm getting the same vision quality as with prescription glasses only - but, as an added bonus, it definitively helps when gunning down the lake to keep the wind out of my eyes. I wear them on a lanyard so I can put them on and off quickly and the lanyard also helps hold them in place when I have them over my normal glasses. Quote

They'll really pay off come springtime when the bass are up shallow and spawning Quote
Bryce C Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 solar bat makes a great pair of sunglasses and they are affordable too....they also have a good warranty. Mossback lens is the way to go. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted July 19, 2011 Super User Posted July 19, 2011 OAKLEY PIT BULL Awesome coverage around all sides to keep light out they are great for my light sensitive eyes. Plus in this hot humid weather sweating lots & lots they dont slip a mm like they are stuck in place. Quote
collegefishing12 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I haven't found light to be an issue on traditional frames unless I am not wearing a hat (which isn't that often). Fit-over frames, like cocoons, have proven to be more difficult because the frame extends much wider than the bill of my hat. I have the Oakley Five Squared now and they block out the light well, and they are also one of the cheaper frame options that Oakley offers. Quote
