ChiCityBasser Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 I know the Quantum products typically get a bad rap here but the new EXO PT looks very promising and is even lighter than the Smoke and comes in a spinning reel model but no left hand model for the baitcasting reel. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewicast11quantumEXO.html http://www.quantumfishing.com/exo Quote
Indiana Bass1 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 You know something,I used to fish Quantum rods and reels and I really got turned off on their stuff so I went bouncing around using all stars and st croix's. Well I picked up a quantum pt 7' mh on sale last fall and it is my favorite rod of the 60+ rods I have. I came across this same model of rod on sale a few weeks ago and picked up the hackney 7-11,and two 6-6 mh. These rods are very light and very sensitive,I love all four of them. I dont see any quantum reels in my near future though.I kinda like my revo's, and carbonlites. Quote

Boogey Man Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Geez... Dispoable gear. Maybe Shimano will team up with Campbells Alphabets Soup next year to win ICAST best of show. "Which Curado are you using?" "It's the B, no D, no, E, no, G", Quote

I'm with ya ~ The EXO does look interesting. However, I'm always concerned about the structural strength of anything designed with a skeletal frame. If there's a concern it may not show up during cranking but flipping might be another story. We'll see. A-Jay Quote

MarauderYak Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Seems the Bicycle manufacturer is taking a step back while others progress. That's funny. But did you know Zebco (Quantum) was originally a bomb company? Zebco was short for ZEro hour Bomb COmpany. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted July 18, 2011 Super User Posted July 18, 2011 Perhaps of interest... http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/quantum-exo-video.html They're talking about an XO casting rod & reel combo here that weights in at right around 10 Ounces ! That's Crazy ~ A-Jay Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 19, 2011 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 19, 2011 I had the opportunity to hold the rod and reel combo and check them out. Very nice setup, and they seemed very strong. Best of all, it was an extremely light combo - unbelievable. It seemed the big trend this year at ICAST was light, light, light weights. The new rods from G-Loomis, Shimano, Abu-Garcia, and more were all very light and impressive. The new Abu MGX reel is stupid light - under 4 oz. These new rods and reels are just insane. Never thought they could make a combo that feels like air, but they've gone and done it. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 The baitcast reels will be right around $249 and the spinning models at $199 with the rods retailing for around $179 from the video. Wow 9.1 oz. for one of the baitcast combo with most being less than 10 oz. which is extremely light as Glenn pointed out. Guess the baitmonkey will be calling soon. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 The recent discussions regarding the EXO and Smoke reels reminds me that until the Revo came along everybody ripped ABU's attempts to make a dent in the low profile reel business. Only time will tell if Quantum makes any progress in the respect department. Quote
Diggy Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Picked up this reel at Dick's today...not bought, messed with the display Reel was light and smooth, Pickedup a revo after and it felt like a brick. I was amazed how nice this reel felt Quote
Super User South FLA Posted December 9, 2011 Super User Posted December 9, 2011 I bought a Smoke and passed on the Exo and now I am kicking myself, didn't realize the EXO is a tier up! Anyway, love my Smoke reel have been using it regularly and that is coming from a reel elitest (JDM Shimano, High End Daiwas) if you know what I mean, time will tell if the Smoke holds up. Quote
barroncooper Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 i've never fished with one but i do own a smoke 150 and i'm a shimano posse member. i like the smoke ok. just handling the exo in the store, I did notice that it is more refined than the smoke. maybe it's just me but i feel like the quantum reels all kind of feel the same from the energy to the smoke and thats kind of gearish on the retrieve. kind of hard to explain. i did not notice this in the exo. I don't think there will be any issues with the structural integrity of this reel. I actually think it's probably stronger than the curado's that I absolutely love. I'm really trying to be unbiased here. the only problems I have with the smoke is that sometimes the clutch bar sticks. I've noticed that the pressure required to push it is a lot less than in other manufacturers and that might be the problem. the other is the gear material. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 I really wanted to get an exo. I'm not really a quantum guy but have used the smoke and the pt tour wnd thought they were pretty nice. I was just about ready.to pull the trigger on one when I read a bass pro review that said the rivets that connected the reel foot to the frame loosened up and that really turned me off. Even if thay were to stay tight I think any quality reel should have a one piece frame. I may still get one but I wont be using it for cranks as originally planned. Anybody have any thoughts on a riveted reel foot. Am I making too much of a big deal about it? Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted December 11, 2011 Super User Posted December 11, 2011 See this: Having a repaired EXO in my hands, I've had the same issues with the drag and with the clutch. It's done it multiple times now, and I understand that it is not an isolated issue. Two of the people that I regularly fish with have had the exact issue with their reels. Quantum, at this point, has not addressed the issue, that I know of, and I've sent multiple emails and a couple phone calls. I've had the reel in my hands for a touch over a month, and have been quite unhappy with it. I wouldn't, in good conscience, be able to sell the reel to someone either. For the time being it's back in its box and not being fished. Quote
