Brad70 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 I recently broke my old spinning rod I had used for 4+ years. It was a 7ft Medium action Lightning Rod and for being a cheaper rod it caught me a lot of fish over the years. Well I finally broke it mishandling it and decided it was time for an upgrade. This rod serves several purposes for me. I fish mainly Ozark River/streams for smallmouth and throw t-rigged tubes with a 1/8 oz weight 90% of the time. I'm looking to keep the rod under $100 and have heard great things about both rods and they are the same price. Which would better serve the purpose for my fishing applications or does it just come down to brand preference? Quote
Brad70 Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Also, if someone would like to reccomend another rod in my price range I'd like to hear about it as well. Quote

berkleyfan81 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 st croix truimph spinning rod 7ft is awesome only $69.99 . It a good rod I use it mostly for everything and it's sensitivity to the bites never broke it yet still new but working it hard also have mine hook up with a Pflueger supreme xt 40 series the old model that was gold . No problems at all durable and strong , think of getting a 6'6ft one soon as for abu garcia saw alot of review with them breaking and the sales man at gander said they were being returned but If you want an abu garica alot of guys like the vendetta . Also IF you buy st coix you get a 5 year warranty like me I went to gander and bought 3 st croix rods and they gave me a 1 year plan on all my rod so i now have a 6 year warranty backing me up . I am not trying to put down abu garcia but just saw some reviews of them breaking ,I do like the vendetta rods thinking of getting one for my baitcaster reel . Quote
Stasher1 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 I'd definitely choose the Veritas over the Mojo, but I'd take a Carbonlite over either of them. I actually looked at the 7' medium Veritas (again) yesterday afternoon as a possible loaner rod for my brother-in-law, but wound up walking out with a Browning HiPower instead. The Veritas had better guides, but the HiPower just looked better and felt better in the hand. I've handled the Veritas several times now, and every single time I've walked out with something else. On paper they seem like great rods, but in person they just fall short of my expectations. Quote
Brad70 Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 I'll have to hold them both in hand at Bass Pro tomorrow and make a decision I suppose. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 15, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 15, 2011 I have the 6' 8" "wacky style" mojo and I really liked the rod but after owning it just over a year two of the guide bent and broke in as many days. I'm hard on my gear I know but nothing that that rod went through should have broken any guides. Luckily I won the tournament I was in the second of those two days so I went the next day and got a new LTB 6' 8" "finesse" that feels great and has much better guides. I have not used the Veritas but I have held a couple of them and they feel very light and seem like they are a good quality rod. Quote
j.bruno Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Ive read some horror stories online about the Veritas snapping in half, and then sure enough my buddy snapped his in half this past weekend. Maybe a bad batch, idk. I got 3 Vendettas and i think they are great rods. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 15, 2011 Super User Posted July 15, 2011 I have a 76mh casting veritas and beat the living snot out of it bewtween cramming it in my little 4door car, sending it into the abyss to knock jigs free, getting caught up in trees well walking over grown trails to get to spots, raming the bank with it poking out the back the canoe when not paying attention. It definitly takes a beating that no rod should ever go threw and mine has yet to break all that's happend is iv bent a few eyes so I bend em back and am good to go. Plus this thing is light and sensitive. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 15, 2011 Super User Posted July 15, 2011 I'll have to hold them both in hand at Bass Pro tomorrow and make a decision I suppose. That's the smart way to do it. Quote
figure8racer Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Agree that you should hold both before you decide. Have them mount the same reel that you plan on using on it while ur at it. They've never had a problem pulling a reel out of the box for me so I can get a true feel. The veritas is lighter/more sensitive for sure and I've beat the crap out of mine with no problems but there are a bunch of horror stories about breakage so look over the rod really close before you buy it if that's what you choose. Either rod is going to be pretty nice so u won't go wrong wither way. Also if you can squeeze a little more money the smoke rod in medium power for senkos is perfect at 129.99. But I throw all casting reels so not sure if they even make spinning versions. Quote
Brad70 Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 I will be sure to examine the rod closely. I have a vendetta casting rod and love it so I hope the Veritas is just as good/better for me. After all the research I've done and reviews I've read, I've seen horror stories on just about all the rods at some point. I started fishing with the Cherrywood and Lightning Rods and never broke one untill recently when I wasn't even fishing with it I just broke mishandled it and have always heard terrible things about those rods. Heading to bass pro in a few and hopefully make a good choice and will be breaking her in tomorrow on an Ozark stream doing some smallie fishing. Quote
figure8racer Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Good luck! The smallies will definately test the rod for you Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted July 16, 2011 Super User Posted July 16, 2011 I have both of these rods (spinning) and have enjoyed them both. However, I probably would not buy another Mojo but plan to pick up at least one more Veritas. I've been using it as a back up drop shot rod and I've been really happy with the sensitivity and durability of the rod. Definitely does not feel frail/prone to breakage to me. Quote

I'll be on the Elk next weekend doing the same thing! Quote

Brad70 Posted July 16, 2011 Author Posted July 16, 2011 What stream are you going to? I'll be on the Elk next weekend doing the same thing! 90% of my fishing is done on Big River in Southeast Missouri. I honestly havent fished too many other streams/rivers in our neck of the woods so I'm not very familiar with the Elk. I've only done St. Francis and Big River. By the way all I ended up with the 7'0 M Veritas spinning setup and tried it out this morning for a bit. It is a bit heavier than my previous 7'0 M Lightning rod and I feel this medium action is more like a MH. With that being said the sensitivity is remarkable on this rod just like you all said. Fishing some swift current spots drifting a tube along I was able to distinguish between rocks/bites very easily. Only fish caught on the new rod was an 8 inch smallie and a 12 inch largemouth before I switched over to the ML rod and rebel craw for a little more fight. Not too much excitement fighting a dink on a veritas rod lol. With that being said this was a "weak" section of Big River with very shallow water. Next trip will be back to my favorite section of Big River with deeper pools and big ol' smallmouth. Quote

Seems like most of them have pretty good smallmouth fishing though. I don't think there is a much more enjoyable way to fish than wading for smallmouth. If you can find them eating topwater it's really easy to loose track of time and be late getting back from the river and find a ticked off wife at home, not that I know from experience or anything Quote
