stkbassn Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I have a quick question about which line to go with here. I have a great cranking set up and I'm considering changing lines to see if there's a difference at all. Currently I'm using #10 EZ Mono from Spiderwire and must say it's been one of my favorites of all of the mono's that I've fished. It's hard to break. However, I'm considering trying fluorocarbon to see if I can get more depth and feel out of it. I've heard great things about the Spiderwire Fluoro but it's $20 as opposed to the $4.39 I spend on a spool of EZ Mono...... I just want to know if the fluoro is worth it. I keep hearing about what a pain fluoro is to manage....I don't want to have to deal with problems on the water.....I'm sticking with #10 either way. I'm also considered trying Suffix Siege Mono in #8 or #10.... Any suggestions here. Quote

My favorite fluoro is seaguar invis-x and bass pro xps flouro (I tend to stay away from bass pro products but this is the exception) I have had problems with fluoro on spinning gear but that was before I started flipping the bail over by hand instead of reeling it over. I have also had issues with fluoro when I overfilled the reel on spinning gear. I use mono for cranking but I can imagine that you can feel the rocks and stumps that you run into much better with fluoro. If I were to use a fluoro for cranking I would use a cheaper one like seaguar red label or bps xps. The horrible fluoro I have used is berkley vanish.... you couldn't pay me to use that stuff again. try some new line until you find one that you like everyone likes a different feel. Quote

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. Vanish is awful. I tried it once on a spinning reel and was very disappointed. My new rod is pretty sensitive so maybe I don't need fluoro. I was mainly wanting it for depth anyway. I suppose if I'm brave I can switch to 8# mono.......that may do the trick as far as getting the crank deeper. 10# has been fine so I can't imagine 8 being that much different.... Quote
Mono Man in IL Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Regardless of what line you use, you'll have better results by closing the bail with your hand vice turning the reel handle. Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I like flouro and most of the stuff I've read recommends cranking with flouro for its sinking properties. With that being said, the Berkeley 100% is good stuff, just expensive. Stren 100% is good and the Stren Flouro Cast actually seems to touch 7 ft with 17 lb line on a medium diving crank (6-8ft). Just my experience. The more amiable the flouro, the less abrasion resistance. From what I have seen that has been the case. Also try some sinking Copolymer lines. They seem to be pretty good too. brushhoggin Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 10lb Trilene 100%. or i suppose if youre comfortable with BPS brand then try their 10lb flouro Quote
BrASSmonkey Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I prefer braid for the thinner diameter and added sensitivity. I am sure I will get jumped on for that, but I like it for determining the cover I am contacting. I also like the ability to rip it free from grass. I find that going low diameter on braid allows me to get to depth. I let the action of the rod cushion against headshakes and absorb the vibration of the bait. Quote
