JacobK Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 What do you do when you get a bass and it gets hung up in a tree? It's happened to me a few times and I usually just try to break the limb or whatever it is and muscle them out which works but today I lost one of my biggest fishes of the day doing this. I use 65lb suffix braid and a 7ft heavy rod. just wondering what other effective methods you guys use? Quote
OHIO Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I don't think there is much to be done. The bass just "win" sometimes. Quote
Red Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I had this happen this past weekend. Using a popper on a ML rod with braid. Fish was around 3lbs. Luckily the stick it wrapped me around was close to the surface, I just broke the limb like you said. Other times there isn't a whole lot you can do. Maybe give the fish slack, hope it frees itself and hope your hook sticks. Cliff Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 12, 2011 Super User Posted July 12, 2011 When I am working a jig and craw in brush and get a bite it is generally on the fall down in the middle of the pile. All I can do is set the hook and keep pressure on the fish until it comes out and most of the time that is exactly what they do. I can't really say about standing timber as we don't have much of it around. But it might be worth a try for you. Quote

That I have found to be true as well, If you keep constant LIGHT pressure on the line the fish will eventually work it's way free. Where I fish there is not much standing timber either but there are a lot of lay downs and beaver huts they get tangled in. Quote
brushhoggin Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 first off, invest in a high speed reel so you can get em up and out of there in a jiffy. keep in contact with your lure by maintaining a semi tight line. the braid youre using should give you the sensitivity you need to detect bites in order to set the hook asap. if youre fishing from a boat, troll away from the structure during the fight or have your fishing partner do it for you, just to eliminate the chance of him diving back down in there. Super User WRB Posted July 12, 2011 Super User Posted July 12, 2011 Agree with catt...it's a crap shot! If the hook gets snagged into the wood, your are done. Letting the bass swim it's way out can work sometimes. Pullimg hard makes the bass pull back harder and can get into more trouble. Positioning yourself so when the bass strikes and you put pressure on it swims itself out of trouble works. You are going to win some and lose some. Tom Quote
Sharpie Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Try this. 1. Position your boat right over the object the fish is tangled with. 2. Give the fish slack line 3. Proceed to stomp on your boat like a mad man. As it will scare your fish out because the stomping sounds like gun shots going off underwater. Just make shure your drag is set accordingly. Quote
