demonjd22 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi everyone! So I'm finally purchasing my first boat today and please don't laugh but it's a 10 foot aluminum jon boat. It's going to be left at a small lake my sister lives on which can't be more than 10 acres. I've decided on a brand new Minnkota Traxxis 45lb thrust motor and have two questions. 1) 45 lbs should be sufficient to crank the boat, myself and a partner along at a decent speed right? With all the gear I figure we'll have like 450 lbs including the boat. The 55 lbs motor is kind of out of my budget range at the moment. 2) Is there a particular brand of battery you guys recommend or for a small single trolling motor can I get away with a cheap Walmart generic? I do love fishing and could envision myself on the water for a 7-8 hour stretch. If the battery did die out I have absolutely no concerns that I could row myself back to the starting point but after a long day of fishing I'd obviously like to avoid this. Anyone have an idea of how long a fully charged battery will last with moderate use without any other electronics hooked up to it? Any pointers or advice you can guys can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Quote
NBR Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Get a Wall Mart deep cycle marine. Maintain the water level and recharge as soon as you come off the water. It might not push you for 7 hours but it beats rowing or sculling with a canoe paddle. Quote

I use them on my 45lb Minn kota edge and have no problem on 1 for the day. about 8 hours out and half the time I'll use the same battery before charging on some of these ponds around my house for about 5 hours fishing on the day. dmac14 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I just bought a walmart 29, if you are truly worried about the battery dieing you could always buy two and run them in parallel. If you look at my post "batteries completely dead" ann-marie made a comment about how much the battery life span is cut down if you run the batteries below 50%. So in theory if you bought two batteries and paralleled them they would most likely last longer than if you buy two separately. Especially seeing as you might possibly drain the one completely on a trip, if you had two you would only drain each to half, thus greatly increasing the life span. Just a thought. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 11, 2011 Super User Posted July 11, 2011 There are some things you can cheap out on but a battery isn't one of them. Don't over load that 10' jon , 450lbs is too much. Quote

bass or bass ? Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Walmart...Everstart Maxx 29 Marine.....$75.00 I use this with a 34lb Thrust Minnkota, no problems, plenty of power. Yep, I have 2 of them , one for trolling motor and other accessories, and one for a starting battery on a "1, 2, both, off" switch. Quote
