stkbassn Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I caught my first 6XD bass last night on a Chart/Craw color right before dark. I really like that color during that low light period. Looking at all of the colors available for the 6XDs one question comes to mind..... Why does Strike King NOT make a dark colored crank for night fishing? I like a chili bowl, red/black, black/red, red craw or dark blue DD22 at night..... KVD may be sleeping at night but I like to night fish and unlike KVD I can't fish every day ! LOL Quote
midnighthrasher Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Why dont you just go into the " tacklemacking " section and ask one of the custom painters to make one for you? Or Buy one and paint it yourself Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 The market for a darker color probably just isn't there as much as the "day time" colors. But, a can of spray paint or a sharpie will not hurt to throw on it. I was always worried about the smell, but I've witnessed that it doesn't matter nearly as much on a moving bait like a crankbait. I may try this on one just to see how it turns out. Thanks. I love the DD22 but I have to say I really like the feel of the 6XD, it's an impressive crankbait. I may also try that Lucky Craft deep diver. It looks good but at $17 it's more painful at the checkout counter than the DD's or 6X's when you want a few different colors. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 8, 2011 Super User Posted July 8, 2011 I feel your pain. I throw deep cranks at night a lot. Luckily, like you said, the DD22 comes in some dark colors which are great at night. One that I throw on a regular basis that works great during the day as well as at night is a Green Pumpkin DD22. Strike King does have one that's kind of dark tinted. I bought a couple just for that reason. The color is something ghost. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 11, 2011 Global Moderator Posted July 11, 2011 The sharpie idea does work. I've colored spinnerbait and buzzbait blades with sharpies when I didn't have the exact bait I wanted and it works and the fish don't seem to notice any smell of the marker. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted July 11, 2011 Super User Posted July 11, 2011 Food for thought: do baitfish get darker at night? Do gizzard shad get black when the sun goes down? You're over-thinking it. Rarely, really rarely, do I switch away from baits that are a working color pattern during the day and I catch fish with no issue at night. I don't buy into the dark baits at night idea, never have, never will. I've outfished many an equally well skilled angler fishing the same patterns as during the daylight hours while they, albeit temporarily, went to their "Night bite" baits. KISS method, rarely fails you. (PS, fish don't read the same books we do.) Quote

No the shad do not change colors...At least not enough to say you need to switch from a white bait to a black bait. But, there are more times than not than a darker bait will cast a better sillouhette in dark conditions... So, the shad will probably get eaten no matter the color. But, it (in theory) has a better chance of being eaten if it can be seen better than its friend swimming beside it. How many natural prey are actually bubblegum pink or bright chartruese???? However, I would not trade these colors for natural colors in the right conditions.... Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 does color matter below 10ft at night? in most water...?? i'm not sure?? does it matter during the day below 15ft? Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I fish a moderately stained/murky lake in east tennessee. Just last week I was practice fishing and got a Spro DD hung in about 18ft of water (says the depth finder) I was stuck on a lay down branch, so make that about 16ft. Well, it being 95 degrees, and the lure being $12 a pop, I dove in to get it. I followed my line down and opened my eyes to see...a greyish white crankbait (i was using sexy shad). I don't know if color matters in day or night, but considering I could still see color would mean than fish would also be able to see it. I haven't been out night diving to very much, but I do know when I've scuba dived at them depths, you can still see objects in my lake at 10-15ft. You may not be able to make them out, but you can tell they are there. A black dive suit will stand out better than a white skinned body and pink dive mask. I do know that. Thats why my choice for black and blue at night stands so strong. Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 15, 2011 Super User Posted July 15, 2011 Can of black spray paint for plastic models and some masking tape??? Quote
