Other Folks Same Lake More Bass

Hello,

Have you ever asked somebody else that was fishing the same lake as you if he had any luck? I do that often out on the water too I'd ask have any luck? The response however is like "Yeah caught 20 bass". When my total for the day out of 3 hours fishing is 1 or maybe 2 bass. On the same lake now, I wonder how these fisherman do so much better than me? Maybe they fished longer than 3 hours but there has been times when I know they are just catching more. I am fishing the same spot for an hour and I turn around to see in a boat a 6 year old girl that reeled two in. Makes ya turn around and laugh and question what could I be doing better? I reckon it's just where I'm casting.

LWD, I will share my thoughts for what it's worth.

First don't believe everything you hear at the ramp. As hard as it is to believe not all fishermen are as honest as you and me. I have been told some truly unbelievable stories of numbers and size. I enjoy the conversation, but take most of it lightly.

Next, there are some really good fishermen out there. Most of them have spent many hours on the water putting into practice what they have learned from countless more hours of study. There is no substitute for this.

Last, enjoy the process. Continue to work to improve, knowing fishing well consistently takes time and effort. This is what makes it such a great sport in my opinion. Good luck.

I experience sort of the opposite, especially in Club Tournaments - to hear the reports from the water, you would think we were fishing the Dead Sea - nobody has caught anything, until we have our check-in at the end of the day. Several years ago, when my Son was about 10, he fished as my partner in an informal tournament. I was struggling on the day and, to hear it, so was everybody else. With about an hour to go, I managed to hook one that was about 14" - after netting him for me, my son said (trying to be like the big boys) - "D**n Daddy, you may be winnin this thing" - I told him, "No Son, wait until you hear what these other guys who said they weren't catching anything actually caught". He has been confused about fishing tourmanents ever since.

Agree with k mac with the emphasis on the last paragraph. Remember this "There are always spots that hold some bass, and there are some spots that always hold bass." Fishing can feel like finding a needle in a haystack, and essentialy it is. The more knowledge you aquire while fishing the easier it will be to find those spots that always hold bass. This means less time fishing unproductive water. Pay close attention to EVERY detail each and every time you go out and never stop learning(try keeping a fishing log). Weather, wind speed and direction, water temp, water clarity, type of structure, weeds(some weeds hold fish, some don't), bottom(mud, sand, gravel, rock), time of day, type of bait, etc. When you develop this knowledge, much of it can carry over to new water. Meaning if I catch fish on lake A with certain conditions, if I find similar conditions on lake B then I will start with what works on lake A. Now to completly screw you up, lakes also can change year to year. Spots from last season may be better or worse this season. Read all you can here, but there is no substitute for time on the water.

The bass are always biting somewhere are you are looking for that somewhere?

In my years of experience I’ve come to the conclusion that some anglers are born with a natural ability for understanding the whole process predator, prey, & environment.

Some anglers can be taught the whole process after many hours of dedicated work.

Some anglers simply never ever get it

Catt makes a great point. The old adage that 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen is valid.

Anglers who aren't one of the lucky ones in the first category, then need to decide if they want to put in the effort to become part of that 10%. Some do, but most can't, won't, or don't!

The lake I mainly fish, almost everyone asks each other since it's not big, bass are densely populated, they are hard to locate, the average depth is around 6-8ft.

At times it gets to the point if you catch a 2-3lb bass the whole lake knows
