Snags You Thought Were A Fish

Hope everyone is doing alright,

I can't explain this one. I was sitting in my kayak no wind line in the water. Then my rod pulls. I wait dead still. It pulls again. Then when I pull back on the rod I discover it's a snag. Any of those mystery snags happen to you? Did it leave you thinking how could of this been a snag? Anyhow I hate it when fish take the lure under around some timber and get snagged well that's something different. Have a goodnight y'all.

I had a nice tap tap tap once. It was a clam on my crank though. Dont know if that counts, haha.

I've set the hook into some timber before. I start reeling and my drag starts screaming.

Really sucks when you think you have a big fish, but it turns out you have a big log.

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I feel a tap and it turns out to be a snag.

I hooked a really thin piece of slate rock about a foot across on a crankbait one time. When I set and it shot off into deeper water I thought I had a big smallmouth. It kept gliding along into deeper water and really felt alive. It was pretty embarrassing when it got close enough to see, I called for the net and everything! My buddy that was with me will never let me live that one down.

It happend to me last night flipping a jig around a beaver dam I snagged a bark bass I hooked a big chunk of tree bark and it was going every which way felt like little head shakes till I got it to the surface and seen it. Boy was I mad lol I just gave it a twitch and the jig came free. Flip flops are the worst to snag they really feel like a fish

Snagging underwater line can fool anyone into thinking they have a fish on for a second or two as the lure slides up or down the line. Every once in awhile you snag line that is attached to a rod/reel. I have had 2 lines that still had live fish that pulled the oputfit into the water; a lake trout in Canada and a big channel catfish near home.

Happens all the time in the rivers I fish. They will take you under the rocks. I had one on where I got the fish all the way to the bank before it decided to take one last dive under a rock.It got off and I ended up getting snagged under that rock.

when im catfishing with live bait its a common thing for me. ill get a hit, go to set the hook and get snagged on tree stumps underwater.

On one of the days I was fishing with Alpster at this year's road trip, I caught a rock! It didn't really pull on my line though, but was more like a dead weight.

I even landed it, though he wouldn't net it for me!

Well, snags sometimes do fight back, once I pulled a log, must have weighted 20 lbs easily and it did fight back.

Yeah, I'm sure that's happened to every angler.

It can be particularly deceiving when you hook a springy limb that flexes and springs back.

But the dead giveaway is the identical response to every pull.

I've had the reverse happen too, when a snag turns into a bass.

If a bass is facing away from you during the hookup, a lunker can sometimes feel like a hooked stump.

The greatest feeling in the world is when you're applying steady pressure to a snag,

then feel the slow pulsation of a bass's tail

I have two theories on the "tap tap snag".

One is an actual fish, like a gill or something else small that drags my bait back into a snag while fishing weightless plastic, usually a stick bait. Tap, drag, drop, hookset, snag, rats in that order.

The other is more subtle and is a result of fishing quality gear. Sometimes while fishing a plastic stick bait on a sensitive rod and line, you feel everything. Feel the bait crawl over a stick and release. The bait drops back down again and when you feel it hit bottom, it feels like a subtle strike. Set the hook, and snag.

Happens to me all the time when shore fishing.

Never had a snag feel like a hit, but I have had bass just reel in like sticks or logs. I caught an average size one last year on a spinner, the hit just felt like a weed. Pulled, and it just moved with no blade thump, honestly thought I had a clump of weeds. Then about 5 feet from the boat, I see a bass(and I guess it seen me), then it takes off like a rocket. Really weird, had a good hookset and everything.

I’ve set hook on stumps, logs, twigs, grass, trout lines you name it & I’ve set hook on it.

The art of feeling a bite is a fine combination of watching your line and feeling for unnatural sensations of what your lure shouldn’t feel like. Sometimes you will feel that classic “Tap”, sometimes you’ll only see line movement, sometimes your line will simply go slack, but sometimes there will only be a feeling of heaviness that is almost like your lure will not move.

If you were fishing an artificial worm or plastic bait the line may have been resting on some sort of underwater structure. When you give the bait a twitch and it doesn't make it completely over the structure it will fall on the same side it was already on and it will fall very fast most of the time making it seem like something is running with it.

Nope, don't know what you're talking about. I always know a snag from a bite... Always.

Kidding aside, I think it's happened to everyone whose fished for some time. I had an embarrassing one myself. I thought I had a huge pig. It turns out that my hook was hooked at the bottom of a smimming ladder that was a little loose. Loose logs fight back too.

I have a bad habit of snagging jigs into the rope used to anchor private swimming platforms. There is often quite a bit of play in those ropes, and sometimes you can snag them 10-20' to the side of the platform. When I snag those semi-loose ropes, they feel just like a bite where the bass just mouths the lure and all you feel is a little dead weight. These jigs are next to impossible to unsnag.

When i first tried jigs a few years ago, me my papa and my dad were fishing new hogan reservoir and i felt some pressure on my jig and i thought a fish had picked it up.I set the hook and i felt weight on the other end and i was like Yeaaaa! lol and when i got it up to the boat it was like a foot long little log.My grandpa was laughing for days

Last week I was fishing and snagged a line, it felt like a fish for a second too. I managed to get the old line and my line free, when I reeled it in it had just head of a smallmouth with a rotting tube in its mouth. It appeared that somone hooked a smallie and it wrapped up in somthing and who ever was fishing broke it off. Geuss that fish never unrapped untill i snagged the line.
