detroit1 Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Yessir, that is a killer deal. no doubt. I should be so lucky... Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 4, 2011 Author Super User Posted July 4, 2011 What do u think its worth I figured at the very least 30 idk. I picked up a old glass cranking rod for 2 dollar Quote
tholmes Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Yep, he got a steal. That old reel, while heavy and slow as molasses by today's standards (3.8:1 gear ratio, IIRC), is built like a tank and should provide reliable service for years with a yearly clean and lube. Parts and service are readily available, too. I'd pick up a spare line guide pawl to have on hand just in case. Tom Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Ambassaduer parts are surpirsingly widely available. They are reliable, perform well and are prime cadidates for upgrades. Some of the more rare models in good condition sell for a good buck, but even everyday use reels will get $30-$40. Good find! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 5, 2011 Super User Posted July 5, 2011 These are still "fishable" reels. My Dad (88yo) recently hung up his "fishing spurs" and passed on to me his prized possession - an early-60s vintage Ambassadeur 5000. I cleaned/lubed it, put 4.7:1 gears in it, and now I'm fishing it occasionally as it nears 50 years in service. The dang thing will just about out-cast my modern low-profile BC reels - and this without a single bearing in the reel. As Dave said above - lots of upgrade possibilities for these reels too if one is so inclined. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 6, 2011 Author Super User Posted July 6, 2011 He broke it in today caught a 26" pike with the first cast he was using it on a cheap zebco rod super whippy idk how he managed he was using it for spinner baits another one that made me scratch my head and give him the side ways head look as in huh ur doing what. But it works I made a few casts with it its just sloooooooooooow Quote
