Basic Types Of Lures

Hi, I just wanted to know some basic information to get me started with bass fishing. I get so confused with all the types of lures. I only use one fishing pole so I am only going to have one type of line. I will probably use soft plastic worms and grubs most of the time but I know other lures are great too. If anybody can give me so basic info on types of lures to use for what situation and maybe even what colors are best it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You said one pole...spinning or baitcaster? might matter to some. I fish both but mostly use spinning rigs. The worm and grub are good starts as you fish bottom (worm) and the entire water column (depending on jig weight, or none) with the grub.

Smallies or largemouth? I'll go generic.

May I suggest a topwater, like a pop-r. This works well with BC or spin. A spinnerbait lends itself more to a BC rig. Let's not forget the senko...again, with either rig.

well here we go

topwater lures(plugs/frogs),jigs, soft plastic worms/lizards ,spinnersbaits,crankbaits. all can fish in 2ft of water and up. With the jig being the most verstaile bait IMO. i would say start out with 4 inch curly-tail grubs on 1/16 to 1/8 jig heads....... my first bass came off a tube jig dark green chartuese tentacles.......then i started with jigs and small jerkbaits that dive to 5ft of water or so. to make it simple just throw the jig in the water and reel it in as slow as possible but steady....

If you are just getting started - and I assume you are fishing mostly from bank - I would suggest starting out with either a Senko or a Lake Fork Tackle Ring Fry. These can be fished weightless and will give you pretty good results. I would also encourage you to consider a buzz bait (especially for early morning or late evening). A chatter bait can also be a good starting lure, but it does take a little longer to get the hang of it, depending on the water and what the fish are doing at the time. A Pop-R is another early or late lure. Hold off on the jigs until you are feeling comfortable with what you are doing - although one of my favorites it is usually not for the novice. The main thing is don't try to do it all at once. Get some high producers, like Senkos and LFT Ring Fries and build on your success. Before long you will need to add a wing on your house to hold all your stuff.
