jasonl Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I will be fishing some lily's this weekend. any help such as links to some fishing frog tips or bait recomendations would be great. ive never fished frogs as u already guessed. Quote
Furbit Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 For the pads I like a 7ft heavy action rod, a high speed reel and 65lb braid. The pads are pretty tuff so strong equipment is what I would recommend. As for which frog, I really like the Mann's Super Frog for the pads. you can work it pretty fast over and threw them, or you can slow it down and just hop it onto the pads and then hop it back into an opening. It also walks pretty well in any opening you find. The main reason for heavy equipment is your going to want to muscle them bass out of the pads as quickly as possible for if they get down deep in the pads your going to need some strong stuff to get them up and out. NHfroggin Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 For a frog i recommend the Rage Tail Toad http://www.***.com/descpageSFTSTRIKE-SKRT.html They move great over the lily pads then you can let them sink into openings, i feel the hook up rate is much better with this style frog than frogs such as the spro or river2sea. -Matt- Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted June 20, 2009 Super User Posted June 20, 2009 you have got to try the canyon plastics 4.5'' frog , they are THE best frogs i have ever fished , in second place would be the rage tail toads . here are the canyon plastics http://www.***.com/descpageFROGSCP-CPF.html you will not be dissapointed Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted June 20, 2009 Super User Posted June 20, 2009 I like the scumfrog poppers, the spro bronze eye poppers, and the bronze eye frogs best. Heavier braid is best unless you are using the poppers, for which I like 20 pound mono best. Quote
FEVER Erie - St Clair Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 If junk weeds are mixed in with the pads put a small red bead on your line before you tie on the frog. The bead will help keep the junk weed (and pads) from grabbing the frog's nose. Don't set the hook when the fish boils on the frog. Drop the rod, count "one thousand one" and give it a hard snap set. Once you get the fish coming towards you never "give it it's head." Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 It all depends on what kind of lily pads you are fishing! Here in FL we fish the ones that have the stalk sticking out a foot or more above water level. For those i use a mann's hollow body frog and twitch/maneuver it through the pads. I found that the Rage Tail toad doesn't go through as well and gets caught in the v stems! If you are fishing the kind that lay flat on the surface than the Rage Toad is your best bet. I use a 7' 6" flippin' stick, Abu Revo STX HS and 65lb braid for this technique. If it is scattered stuff i use a 7' 3" H/F rod, Abu Revo STX and 50lb braid. BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!! Quote
AnthonyS Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I like the Ribbit Frogs. I have a spro frog but I find I have more luck with the ribbit frog because I can fish it just under the surface. I also preffer the changable frog boddies incase of a quick color change. Quote
Branuss04 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 If junk weeds are mixed in with the pads put a small red bead on your line before you tie on the frog. The bead will help keep the junk weed (and pads) from grabbing the frog's nose. Cool, I'm gonna have to try this! Thanks Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Does the bead being red make it more weedless or what!?! ;D Quote
Flippin & Pitchin Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I have recently and began using the Spro Bronzeye Frogs and can't say enough good things about them. I start with a Bronzeye Popper and then if that doesnt produce I try the Jr. If neither of these can make a constant bite then I will try a buzz frog of some sort. I can get alot of blowups on these just don't land many of the fish. I always have a soft plastic bait to throw at missed fish and seem to have pretty good luck catching them on the first or second cast. Quote
scaledriver Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Catching fish with a frog is just plain FUN! Lots of great advice here on what to use and how to use them for sure. My first time out I missed a lot of fish that got on cause I was trying to set the hook way to soon. I stuck with it and my last time out playing with my frogs I got 8 out of 10 in the boat. Quote
