Recently Noisy Baitcaster

I've noticed for about the past week my bait caster has become very noisy now. It is a BPS Pro Qualifier. It's some sort of a scraping like sound, not necessarily a grinding sound. It's kind of hard to compare it to something, but I guess It would sound similar if you took two pieces of hard plastic and rubbed them together, sort of like a screeching plastic-like sound. The reel is only about 3 months old as well. I'm too afraid to take apart the reel, because I'm afraid parts will go flying everywhere. I have taken apart reels before though, so I guess If I absolutely had to, I could do it. The only thing I could figure is that dirt or something got inside of the reel. I did take the reel on a few saltwater trips, but I was very adamant about hosing both the rod and reel off immediately after getting them home. What could be the problem?

You didn't say HOW you hosed it off. I know in my Penn reel owners guides they stress rinsing reels of saltwater under normal running water, not a stream from a nozzle, as this can drive salt further into the reel. IMO it should be stripped, cleaned and lubed ASAP before any corrosion can take place.

hard to say. youll have to decide if the reel is worth the cost to have it serviced.

noisy baitcaster during casting is usually due to rust in the spool bearings. Add a couple of drops of oil in the side plate/spool bearing and the bearing in the cast control. But you really need to take out the bearings and clean with solvent to remove dirt and rust. Then put a couple of drops of reel oil before putting it back.

Well here's an update. I cleaned out the old oil/grease available on the exterior parts and reoiled/greased the parts. I noticed the worm shaft was exceptionally dry, so once I relubed it, the reel worked a lot better, and is now a lot quieter. I'm still going to send the reel in for a complete breakdown before the year ends.

Having experienced worm shaft and pawl failure many years ago I put a drop of oil on the worm shaft nearly every day of fishing.

Lubing is important and always worthwhile. A full deep cleaning and re-lube is probably in order as you mentioned.

I know my worm shaft was sticking to one side and clicking at times on my PQ. I lube it and tightened the screw now it's fine. Been out 5 times with reel since and no problems since.

I have the same reel and have the same problems and I've had it roughly the same amount of time. DO NOT TAKE IT APART. I cursed for an hour and a half trying to get the gears realigned. My advice is to take it to be serviced. I was told it was something about my gears weren't aligned. Mine still makes the noise. I'm taking it tomorrow or should I say today to get it fixed.

I'm just hoping it's a couple bucks and not like 50. That'd be have the cost of the reel.

I tried oiling it and it helped but the noise just came back. I thought it was just me and some bad luck with reels this being the second I've bought this season, the other I took back cause I had it malfunction on me 2 times. It wasn't the BP Pro Qual though.

If you go to a tackle shop near you they can either fix it or give you someone's number of who can. Good luck to you.

I too have a fear of taking a reel apart. My first baitcaster was a Shimano Bantam Mag Plus 250SG. It was the early 80's and I think that I was about 12 years old. I took that bad boy apart and I couldn't put it back together to save my life. I was scared to death to tell my dad about what I had done. I finally broke down and told him. He refused to put it back together for me and my mom had to drive me uptown to a fishing store and I paid that guy $9.00 to put it back together for me. LOL

It taught me to not take apart one of these reels. I've read in this forum that you should clean a new Shimano reel of excess grease when you get it in order to obtain better performance but there is no way that I would personally do it. I have learned my lesson. LOL

Don't feel bad guys. You wouldn't believe the number of times I've received a "Bag-O-Parts" from someone that took a reel apart and got side tracked or whatever. One guy's wife "helped" him by scooping the lined out parts into a bag so they wouldn't get lost when he stepped away to do something else.
