Buying A Rod For My Friend

My best friend recently had knee surgery. We both love to fish together. He is a great fisherman, and loves the feel of St. Croix rods. He always raves about how nice they would be, but never buys them... so I thought it would be nice to get him one as a recovery gift. I am looking to spend around 100 dollars, so I went to tackle warehouse only to find they only carry the Mojo Bass in that range. I know there might be better options in the $100 dollar price range, but I know how much the St. Croix name would mean to him. I know the main complaint with the Mojos is that they are tip heavy. Would a 6'6" Medium be tip heavy? Or is that still light enough to not be overly tip heavy.

Also any prayers for him would be appreciated as the surgery didn't go very well at all. We are both 16 now, and after the surgery the doctors told him there is a very good chance he will have arthritis at age 30. And I doubt he will be able to keep wrestling, which he loves as much as fishing.

The 6'6" should not be all that tip heavy, if at all. Go for it!

Doctors say that to sort of scare/impress the importance of proper care to their patients. I blew my ankle up when I was 21 and got the same arthritis by 30 statement. I'm 33 now and it does get stiff from time to time (wah wah wah...) however my ankle is 100%. I took care of it and didn't rush my rehab, once I was ok to go be an idiot again I wore support. Tell him to keep his chin up stay active (but don't abuse his body) and he will be good to go for a long time.

What was bad about the surgery? Doctors usually say two things to kids with fractures, you're lucky you can walk after this and the arthritis bit at a certain age so take care of it.

If there's a gander mountain near you look for the st croix premiers, they sometimes have them for $80

By the way it was a torn meniscus in his knee. Not sure exactly what happened, as I'm no doctor, but I do know that the surgery didn't go as planned and the doctors weren't able to remove all they wanted to.

Sorry to hear about your friends injury, but what you're doing warms my heart. Friends like you are hard to come by and that will be a gift that he'll never forget. I'll keep him in my prayers.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I got him the 6'8" Medium X-Fast spinning rod. He mostly fishes the Susquehanna for smallies, so I think he'll love it.

Thats a great action, I'm sure he'll love it. I fish the Susquehanna all the time and have a 6'8" MXF in another series that I use to fish spider grubs.
