mlpauley Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 What is the most accurate fish scale to buy? Quote
Super User flechero Posted June 18, 2009 Super User Posted June 18, 2009 many of the berkley or rapala digitals are quite good. If you want something very good, look at something like the salter... http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0011589014851a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=scale&sort=all&Go.y=0&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&Go.x=0&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 18, 2009 Super User Posted June 18, 2009 If you want a mechanical scale that can be certified and handles fish without risk of injury, look at Boga-Grip: http://boga-grip.com/ 8-) Quote
Super User flechero Posted June 18, 2009 Super User Posted June 18, 2009 The Boga is ok, I have one... the problem is that they have a small area to read where the weight incriments are printed... which allows a lot of variance from one person to the next. The salter is a better scale, IMO, and will certify easily. Quote
Furbit Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Not to change the subject, but how or where do you go to get your scale certified? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 18, 2009 Super User Posted June 18, 2009 Not to change the subject, but how or where do you go to get your scale certified? http://www.agr.state.il.us/programs/consumer/w&m/index.html All states have a "Department of Weights and Measures". Their main duties are certifying commercial scales, gas pumps and things of that nature. Yours may direct you to someone in town or in the county. 8-) Quote

arul Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I was going to post this topic as well... I recently got a good sized fish, and we had a crap scale. Now I am wondering just how big my fish REALLY was...? I was so excited, I failed to think about documenting the thing more accurately. IF I ever catch another lunker, I am going to make sure I have a really good scale, and I am going to take measurements as well so I can get a replica made... Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 What is the most accurate fish scale to buy? Are you wondering if yours is off? Which do you use now? I use a Berkley one that seems to be quite accurate! Quote
mlpauley Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 i had a rapala one and we weighed my new pb fish and it read 5 something lol. Then we took it to the ranger station and it was 9.2lbs!! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 19, 2009 Super User Posted June 19, 2009 Any scale off the shelf may not be exact, legal is generally +/- 1%. As a recreational fisherman being off 1/10 of an ounce is unimportant to me, but if I were losing sleep over it I send it in to the IGFA. Daily handling of any scale may knock the calibration off. Take many many pics also do them beside the fish and anything that can relate to his size rods are good so are yardsticks ,boatseats, anything really main thing is at least 10 pics of fish laying down on each side, holding it up ,in your lap etc etc Quote

SteveF Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I have and believe in the Cul-M-Rite scales. They are absolutely spot on accurate!! Quote
FEVER Erie - St Clair Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Buy a five pound bag of sugar at the supermarket. Leave it in the plastic bag you get from the super market. Weigh it using your scale. If it isn't 5 pounds on the digital readout - you've got a problem. This is an old tournament trick and we'd do it every couple of weeks. For recreational fishing once or twice a year should be good. I always rely on digital - but that's just me. Quote
