Sippi Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 So I've not ever really been a tournament person, mostly just fished for the fun of it near my area. But my stepson is coming down to visit for the summer, and really wants to do a tournament. I've got a little john-boat with a trolling motor for the local reservoir nearby... Does anyone know of any "local" (meaning somewhere around Richmond) tournaments or activities that I could take him to to try out a little tournament fishing? Thanks, Sippi Quote

I would mind fishing a few of them. Quote

Thanks, Sippi Don't know if you are interested or if it is too far for you but Lake Anna has open Friday night tourny's and for your boat that would be better due to the fact that most of the larger boats are either comming off the water or soon will be off the water. The last one I was in it was only 20 bucks and the launch fee of 8 or 9 bucks. It's a lot of fun if you want to know what a tourny is like and not a whole lot of pressure. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 28, 2011 Super User Posted June 28, 2011 Watkins Landing has a smallmouth club tournament every other Wednesday. July 6 and 20. Starts at 4 or 4:30 PM and goes to 8 or 8:30 PM. Just show up. The entry fee is very reasonable. I will ask another person about the tournament and then send you a PM with the details. Watkins Landing is off Route 711, Robious Road, just past Route 288. Look for the DG&IF sign on 711. Nice bunch of guys and you fish the upper James which is not tidal. Just to make sure I get back to you, send me a PM as a reminder. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 30, 2011 Super User Posted June 30, 2011 it does I don't know website off hand go to bass clubs and its central va. bass club its a link there you should join man we fish 1 a month and its sandy briery nottoway Mia resevoir etc small local lakes Does the Game Commission know your club has tournaments at Briery??? Did you get special permission for that??? Quote
lefty Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Is competition illegal? Me and my buddy compete every time we go anywhere to see who catches more/bigger fish. How is that any different just because someone is not in the same boat. Wayne, your not the game warden are you? Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 1, 2011 Super User Posted July 1, 2011 Lefty, in Virgnia there are some bodies of water that the Division of Game and Inland Fisheries monitor and you need a permit to fish a tournament. My B.A.S.S. Region tried to circumvent the permit requirement on Buggs Island and they got caught at the weigh-in. Ticket cost the Region $205 which has me upset as we could have used that money for other events, like Kids Casting. Wayne P. is asking if your club or group received permission to have a tournament on Briery Creek. I would research that possibility and then apply for a permit before have a club tournament on Sandy Creek or any other Virginia body of water even though there are very few locations where permits are needed. Just food for thought. Quote

Looks like a fit for things I'd like to do. Just gotta figure out how/where to pay fees. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 1, 2011 Super User Posted July 1, 2011 Sent PM on the upper Historic James River tournament. If you have a large bass boat I can fill you in on two tournaments on the lower Historic James River but fishing the lower part of the river is dangerous if you are in a small boat. Quote
