I enjoyed reading the thread. But I wanted to point out that that Hud is not ruined. One word... MENDIT!!! I have one Hud in particular that has caught around 15 fish. They last a long time but you do have to repair them from time to time with Huddlebond, mendit or some other soft bait glue.

One other thing on the weedless Hud. If you extend the hook slot opening on the back just past the bend in the hook. You will have a much better hook up ratio. You will see what I mean if you grab the bait and press the hook out. It has a tendency to hang up. I just take razor blade and put a small slice in it.

Hope this helps.

Got up hella early and spent a few hours at dawn frog fishing which was fun. Missed a few fish but hooked a couple as well. Nothing huge with the biggest being 2.5# but fun to get those blow ups in the erie, still, foggy water early in the morning like that.

This fish had a bite taken out of it’s dorsal fin/back. I’ve been catching bitten fish lately for some reason lol

Finally got up a little north for the first time to try to figure out some Maine smallies. Didn’t get to spend as much time on the water as I would have liked but had a great time with my woman and I’ll be going back to this lake to really dissect the water.

Ended up with a few decent ones, largest of the day being a new PB of 3.04 shown here.

You can see the tail is like bit up or something.

Decent fish came on jigs and smaller ones were chasing crankbaits. I wanted to go deep and hunt for monsters but we never got out deep for long. Really can’t wait to get back out and up the PB. I marked a few spots while we were running along that looked like they might be good holding areas. The wind and waves were a little hard on our little boat but I’ll get back out there and tough it out soon enough.

So did you ever make it to that smallie lake I told you about? I've got that one pretty much figured out but every once and a while it kicks my but. Nice looking smallmouth!

lol I made it there once and did exceptionally poorly lol. I really gotta step my smallie game up! I caught my first one just this season but still it feels like I should have a better lock on them. I'm gonna keep trying for them and I'll be making it back to that spot you told me about soon. I'm pretty determined to figure them out while I'm here in Maine!

Good to hear from you man! I take it you've been out on the water actually fishing lately instead of online talking about it like the rest of us haha. Hope it's been going well!

Been fishing on just about every that I'm off. Just learned how to read my fish finder and have been catching smallies in 30+ foot of water. I've been drop-shotting smelt looking flukes, I can actually see my rig on the finder and watch the smallies on the screen actually come up and take it. I can even tell if it is a perch or bass on the screen. I actually start by finding the white perch and then you will find the bass. I was watching bass on the screen come up from 34ft to about 12ft going right through a cloud of perch and go back down to 34ft, must be feeding on the smaller perch. It is really cool I haven't had this much fun fishing in awhile. This winter I'm going to buy a real nice finder to put on the bow. It's going to have side imaging and down imaging, I think I've unlocked a secret weapon for tournament fishing! This is how i had caught and lost that giant smallmouth!

Man it sounds like you really have that fish finder on lock there. I’m still definitely working on figuring mine out. Every time I think I might have it nailed it laughs at me. I’ll think I’m on a school of monsters and fish the spot for 30 min without a bite lol

I really like the way you described the way you’re using it. One day you’ll have to show young grasshopper how it’s done.

Got a chance to get out on the hunt for some river smallies. Had a great time! Caught around 20 fish, the largest being a new PB of 3.9

Here’s the 3.9

It measured 19” and came on a jig with a rage craw trailer

Here are a few pics of some of the other ones

I feel like the smaller ones in the 1.5-2# range give a better fight. I think I heard that somewhere and so far I’ve found it to be the case.

The fish came on all sorts of lures – from a 10” worm to jigs to tubes to rage craws to spinnerbaits. Had a great time trying out different techniques and trying to find some bronzebacks on the big ole Penobscot!

Thanks man! Yeah I think the smallmouth fishing is supposed to pick up here towards fall. I'm gonna be hitting the river more and more as the weather cools down.

I am promised at least one smallmouth trip this fall/winter so hopefully I can catch a nice one. Haven't fished for them in many years, so to up my pb of 2 3/4 shouldn't be hard! MAYBE!!

Was this the Union river? There is some good smallmouth fishing there! Or was it the Penobscott?

I just caught my new PB smallmouth too, congrats!
