ICU812 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 HA yeah man let's hope - thanks for the love! Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 19, 2011 Super User Posted July 19, 2011 Went out for an hour and a half last night to a relatively new spot. Ended up following the loons to a spot where the baitfish were boiling in 15 FOW. Only time I ever followed any loons they led me to a bar. Oh, did you mean birds? Quote
ICU812 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 haha yeah man that's definitely a cool thing about being up in Maine you get to see some beautiful nature that isn't all over the rest of the country. But yeah I'm usually the loon leading ppl to the bar Thanks for stopping thru! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 21, 2011 Author Posted July 21, 2011 took the dog out for a couple hours to see how he'd like being out on a boat - nothing deep but eventually ran into a little jig bite by some fallen timber and pulled a few more small guys out. Think I may have had a big one on a worm but of course it spit the hook Something about the way I'm fishing plastics lately has me missing lots of hooksets. Here's the munchkins Quote

Here's the munchkins I take my dog fishing as much as possible, but in the TX heat she doesn't do so well and moves around a ton. I feel that her moving around in my little aluminum boat makes too much noise. Good job finding fish. Hows that new depth finder working Quote
ICU812 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 Yeah the heat was pretty intense (mid 80's) and my dog didn't seem to be able to get too comfortable. I think I'll wait till it cools down and I have decks installed on the boat to bring him back out again. Depth finder is helping a lot - used it today to find a dropoff with some underwater weeds where I hooked into this nice chunky guy. Went a hair under 3 lbs at 2.86 for my pb lmb of the season Thanks for stopping by the thread! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 Got out for a few hours with my girl today. She was having great luck on a curly tail zoom worm – she stuck two really nice bass, which made the day worth it. I was throwing a huddleston swimbait most of the day and got my first hud strikes, but didn’t hook up with any swimbait fish. I switched over to a finesse jig for a few pitches around some timber and punked the skunk with this little 2 lber. The heat wave finally broke and it was nice to get out on the water. Quote

ChiCityBasser Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Nice fish and I keep a spreadsheet log of each fish and the conditions and lure. I bank fish and hit most of the lakes I fish multiple time through the season and the log helps. Quote
ICU812 Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 Deep - yeah man that was my first subsurface swimbait strike I've been doing pretty well with my Mickey Sr topwater - but now I have a little more confidence in throwing traditional hudds. I need to get some 8" ones though, I only have 6" and bet the 8" swim much better. ChiCityBasser - Nice man that's a good idea. I try to keep most of that information in my head and I bet writing it down somewhere might prove to be helpful. I might try that in the future! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Got out for an hour today and thankfully I'm starting to learn this lake a little bit - stuck with the little finesse jig around some timber and stuck this 4.16 lber for my PB of the season! In my excitement I forgot to measure it's length but I'd guess around 20 inches or so? Really not positive - but it's good to confirm that there are big bass in these waters! Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 26, 2011 Super User Posted July 26, 2011 Very nice fish. Learning them jigs Quote
MaineBassMan Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Looks like your in them good now. Just got back from a three day canoe trip and fished some very under pressured water. Didn't catch any over five but caught a bunch of bass. Three were over four (largemouths) and one three and a half pound river smallie. Couldn't fish that good because my canoe got busted up and I had to jump in another canoe with two guys whom rather paddle like crazy so it was one quick cast to a piece of structure if I was lucky! I might be down your way to prefish Toddy Thursday. I have a tournament there the weekend after next and it will Probably be the only time I can go. It will not help me much in two weeks but I need to get freshened up since I've only been there once this season. Keep on them! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Very nice fish. Learning them jigs Yeah man I'm really liking them! I love the stoutness of the jig hook as opposed to worm hooks and also the fact that the jig hooks are exposed. Those two attributes are making me prefer jigs to worm fishing atm. I feel it's much easier for me to lose a fish on a worm. Quote

Yeah I’ve had a little luck lately but a few rough days too, but that just makes the good days all the better! I just love getting out there. This pond I’ve been hitting is real close to where I live and in a relatively populated area so I’m just glad it provides such a nice fishery. I bet there are some 5-6 lbers in there. Sounds like a fun trip man! Sorry your canoe got busted up lol but at least you got into some decent fishing. That 3 ½ pound river smallie must have been a nice fight! I gotta get out on the Penobscot soon and see if I can get some river smallmouths here. Hey if you’re coming down to Toddy definitely let me know! I’ve only been there once this year as well and found a little structure that I’d like to check out but really I don’t know anything about the lake. It’d be cool to link up! I know there are some monsters in there after seeing that 8 lber they hauled out of there! Either way good luck on your upcoming tourney!! Quote

I need to get some 8" ones though, I only have 6" and bet the 8" swim much better. Yes, the 8" hudd is a different beast. It has a bigger thump than the 6", and is less subtle. You could also try some hudd 68s if you find them for cheap. Or a traditional paddletail, like an Osprey. I bet the water temp is high enough for those. The funny thing with the hard swimbaits is that even little fish will hit them. I fished for about 2 hours this morning. Mostly threw a 6" BBZ Jr floater. I caught 3 bass on it, and guess what, the biggest was 14", and the smallest probably around 10" lol. Quote
ICU812 Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 The weather’s been pretty iffy around here lately and I haven’t really had a chance to get out much, but I managed to pull a couple chunky 3lbers out recently so I figured I‘d share. I’m hoping to get up to a smallmouth fishery this weekend if all goes well and that should be a good time. These guys came on jigs. When I first got out there I found a crazy bite that must have been smaller guys cuz they’d hit a rage craw on every toss but they’d keep tearing off the claws lol. Not sure if anyone else has ever had this happen to them but I went thru a whole pack like that lol I was being stubborn. kinda sucks but I guess you could call it a pattern LOL I chose not to waste another pack on the spot Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 3, 2011 Super User Posted August 3, 2011 Most of the time when that is happening to me it is bluegill! Good catches and keep it up! Jeff Quote
BassCats Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 You can save those and use them as a finesse presentation when the bite gets tough. Quote

Jeff yeah man I was hoping if they WERE bluegill or some baitfish there might be some bigguns around preying on them - but no luck in that particular spot lol. Still learning my marine biology haha Thanks for stopping by the thread!! Tight Lines! Quote

That reminds me of a video I saw of Matt Allen catching a bass off a single strand of plastic from a tube lol - goes to show you can get pretty crazy with your ingenuity with this ish when you need to Thanks for stopping thru and tight lines to you! endless Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Are you ever going to slow down ICU?? WTG stay slaying them I see. How's your lady doing I haven't seen any pics by her lately or am I just missing them? So how many does that make for you on the year? How many 3's,4's all and all? Quote

How's your lady doing I haven't seen any pics by her lately or am I just missing them? So how many does that make for you on the year? How many 3's,4's all and all? Lol yeah man I’ll slow down come winter probably – unless I get into Ice fishing haha I guess lots of ppl up here ice fish. Yeah beezy’s caught a few that she hasn’t posted yet – I forget exactly but I think she stuck a nice healthy 2 the other day. She’s still looking to break 3lbs – hopefully this weekend we’ll run into some chunky smallies – gonna try to head up north and hit a smallmouth lake. Man I only have one 4 this year so far and maybe six or seven 3’s. Just got a 3.8 yesterday that I could of SWORN would have been a 4 lol. I usually only get out for an hour or two at a time so sometimes it’s hard to really go searching for them, but I feel I’m getting better at locating them. Quote
ICU812 Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 Got out and wanted to try something different so I tied this “flickin rig” I’d heard about on a spinning rod and boy were they loving it! Pulled up to a ledge that went from 14 to 9 feet and parked at about 10 fow. Threw out the rig towards the deep and on my second cast my line shot up on the fall. I pulled back and set into a chunky 3 ½ lber that wanted to fight. Something I’m loving about the rig is the exposed jig hook – when you set that jig hook the fish really isn’t gonna go anywhere. So I fought it in and got it in the boat. So to me this is already a good day lol. And I’m liking the rig. So I throw it back out same spot and whack I get it hit again on the fall. Nice big fight again and nice big fish. Same class. 19” 3 ½ lb. Not sure what the bass are feeding on but they seem real healthy in this lake. So I shoot a little vid on my phone and snap the pic, weigh and measure the fish. Then I cast back out and the bite has stopped. Probably foolish of me to waste time when a bite like that is going on I know, but I was having a great time. I fish around the spot a little more and pull up a little smallie. Didn’t even know this place had smallies. Not a huge fish but hey 2 species day. I figure I should maybe throw a crankbait on and fancast the area to search for schools if there are schools around. So I throw a suspending crank on and hook into something. Lol 12” white perch. Haha what's going on? Lol 3 species day. So that spot slows down. I still want to try something different so I move real shallow and tie on a frog. I’m throwing a frog in about 2 feet of water and it gets blown up by some pickerel weeds. The bass engulfed it. 2 ½ lbs. My first frog fish. Don’t get any more frog bites, so I go over to some timber and toss a jig. I feel it getting bit but it feels small. I toss it again and set the hook on a crappie lol. I would have gotten a pic but I lost it right at the boat as I was poppin it up out of the water. Didn’t know there were crappie in here. 4 species Day lol I move up towards a dock and throw out the flickin rig and catch 3 more bass in 3 more casts. I’m really liking the rig lol. The first two were around 2. The 3rd came when I threw past the dock into a little cove and came in as the best fish of the day at 3.86. Nice man I’m pushing a 15lb limit here lol. It’s about time to go in and I had left the last spot to get that last pic lol so I moved to a ledge close to the landing and threw the flicking rig. Hooked into a 19” pickerel lol to close out the 5 species Day. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 6, 2011 Super User Posted August 6, 2011 Nice! I had a 7 species day about 3 weeks ago. Kinda crazy, but between the 2 of us we caught, lmb, gar, catfish, crappie, bream, pumpkinseed and a drum! LOL Jeff Quote
